3rd Test (Lord’s) - 10 July to 14 July

Has honestly been a horrible game to umpire. Players going out of their way to waste time at every opportunity, balls keep going out of shape, pitch that stays low but when you give an LBW out Hawkeye says it's going over. And most of the cricket has been turgid and boring. Plus it's hot. And now a captain has told the opposition opener to grow some ****ing balls.

Regarding balls and spares - the ECB is responsible for providing match balls and spares for the series. They control what is provided to the umpires at the start of the game, and the umpires take care of it during the match - literally. I've known umpires to take the match balls back to the hotel with them at the end of the days play if there is no secure storage at the ground!
When they've actually played, the cricket has been fine, both teams have had their moments in both innings, if it is going to end in a draw, it will be because of the quite farcical amount of overs lost, essentially 2 sessions over 3 days, and yet they rigidly stick to 11-6:30...

At international level umpires should not be having any input on ball prediction on lbw shouts, as that can and should be automated.

The Wheel is Forever
Let's be real, we all would do the same thing.
Oh absolutely - Ishant Sharma once came out to bat with the wrong gloves. I do not blame Zac Crawley - I would WANT a player on a team I support to do this. Eg let’s say Bumrah did it so he wouldn’t have to face another Jofra Archer over. Totally, I get it from the player and teams perspective.

Of course players will do this - they’d be stupid not to.

But we need to think about this objective from the point of view of “what’s the best thing for the sport?” Rather than flip flopping based on whether the team we support is on one end of this vs another.

You have to make rules so that such things are not allowed. Take it out of the umpires hands. A very important part of the rules of any sport involve things that make sure the game flows smoothly, at an acceptable pace, and fairly, with fairness to both the players as well as for the spectators.

If you don’t show up to bat within x period, you’re out without an appeal (so no one gives BS about spirit of the game). Over rates are slow from bowling side, give a huge penalty in runs at end of every session. Batsmen wasting time? Umpires get to add time beyond schedule play (light pending), and if light becomes bad, they get penalized runs from their total.

Three times delay in an innings when the bowler is ready (which were time wasting in view of umpire, so two warnings), and you’re out.

It’s one thing and almost part of the game if the overs are close to what’s scheduled and people play these games once in a while. But losing multiple sessions worth of play because of nonsense is not fair to all of us fans. It makes for a poor watching experience and if it’s one thing that Tests can do without - it’s an even worse fan experience.

I have always thought the over rate stuff was not as big deal as made out because I felt cricket was good, there were plenty of results and the game was moving at pace. But this has changed my mind, both teams are moving so slow as to diminish the experience for the fan who spends literally 40 hours in a week watching this game.

Halfway through the series and it's been fun viewing. Far from the best cricket you'll see but evenly matched for what it is and well-attended. Time well wasted.

Live I was very surprised the first one at Deep was given, that did look like it was going down (very close to umpire's call mind you!), second one looked absolutely plumb!
I thought they were both going down the leg side but the second was a better shout than the first.

Think we’ll try and score about 300 in 60 overs, should give us a full day to try to bowl them out!
Interesting dilemma on how to play it.Logic suggests that it should be a draw but that's not England's style although they have been a bit more circumspect in this match.

Largely agree. I saw an article with the CEO of Dukes who argued that the current summer being so hot and dry means the ball doesn’t last so well. However, this was a problem the last two years when the summers were nothing like as hot and dry as this one.
That's a pretty terrible excuse. It's a ****ing cricket ball. It's meant to be slammed into the earth at pace and smacked hard with a piece of ****ing wood.
