1st Test (Leeds) - 20th June

I'm suprised this caught all the crap it did even though it didn't work out. This isn't like Nasser going against the grain in Brisbane for no reason and getting immediately punished, the facts and figures back up chasing here. As mentioned earlier in the thread, there's only something in it for the bowlers when it's fresh or when it's damp, and big 4th innings aren't uncommon. This is England's 6th consecutive win at Headingley and they've batted second every time.

But really I don't think the toss mattered at all much. Both sides have better batting than bowling and the team that dropped it more lost.
I think the one thing you could say about the toss was that India batted at more friendly times from a weather perspective and it was offering a bit of turn on the final day. But overall, the two collapses decided it, unforgivable on that surface really.

they used to say batsmen (batters) set up matches, bowlers win you games

don't know if that is the case any more

might be bowlers set up (big) scores, and batters win you the games
On flatter decks, opponents can't score enough runs or bat for long enough to put England out of the game, and that must prey on the minds of batters and keep England's bowlers in the game.

It’s not even a big deal anymore is it. Just England doing England things. And I fkn love it.

A batting line up that is apparently brain dead just chased 370 to win a test match on day 5 with wickets and overs to spare.
That opening partnership was what I think most of the BazBall doubters hoped could be put together. Really sensible in the first hour and then took full advantage.

Brook still has brain dead moments mind!!

I don't like to see people fail at what they do for a living but boy I don't mind seeing G Gambhir sucking hard like this. Turned a very good team into whatever this is in space of months. Literally the only good thing about this result
Lost 7/9 recent tests apparently

Went wicketless in the final innings, to be fair.
Yeah, I saw that. Pretty disappointing if you're an Indian supporter. Will be interesting to see how he travels for the rest of the series. You'd expect him to have an impact at some stage, but who knows? Given the nature of overseas tours these days, most teams come into the first test underdone in terms of prep for local conditions, but anytime Bumrah plays, India are under pressure to chalk up a win given the rest of their attack. If he is going to sit out 1 or 2 matches this series, they are now behind the 8 ball.

how important it is to have your Gatussos, your Roy Keane's, your Virat's, your Cummins', and your Stokes' in a team

India don't seem to have any. This was why I hated Root as captain

Dropped catches as well in the first innings. I didn't watch last night as I was out at dinner but it seems the losing or the match was earlier in it rather than on the last day, as you’ve said.

They really miss Shami. He’s particularly good in fourth innings.

but they have issues with the balance of their side. Their tail is genuinely awful, 8-11 offer very little with the bat, and Siraj seems to have gone backwards from where he was a few years ago

My mate the coach has been saying for months that India’s pace bowling cupboard is bare apart from Bumrah

He does some consulting to an IPL team, sees videos of a lot of their young guys & reckons that their total focus upon t20s is going to bite them on the arse as they’re not prepared for red ball stuff

Skilled bowlers like Shami, Zaheer, etc are just not prioritised

Was just thinking that India is in a far worse spot than Australia

We need a couple of top order batsmen

India needs 3/4 bowlers and about 9 fielders
Batting isn't exactly in great shape either. Gill needs to show more consistency over a longer period before I actually trust him to be any good. Apart from Jaiswal and Pant , it's a very shaky lineup.

India may lose 5-0 if pitches remain roads throughout the match. Very high scoring.

1680 runs, 35 wickets
@48 runs per wicket

(despite Ind's 7/41 and 6/31 collapses)

Tbh par score was 500-550 in the first innings and 400-450 in the 2nd innings, so 371 was comfortably chased.
