The Wheel is Forever
I don’t usually bet against India but I did win a small amount of money betting England wouldn’t lose wickets early and that they would win when they were 2.3. Makes me feel icky but also shows how bad India are if one dude doesn’t perform or doesn’t play.
Also Gambhir sucks

A very pleasing win, the entire top 7 contributed in their own way, Woakes didn’t get the wickets but I thought did bowl quite well and at least kept the run rate down which ended up being very important, Carse was dutiful on an unhelpful deck, Tongue didn’t have that much success against the top order but did a great job cleaning up the tail (which we’ve historically had problems with!). Bashir wasn’t terrible, but equally wasn’t great albeit on an flatty against players who have grown up playing against myriads of Shoaib Bashirs

Whatever it takes!!!
Well, that was a very hard watch as an Indian fan.

Big big congrats to England. You can say what you want about the pitch, the conditions and the attack (and I have, about the attack atleast :) ) but to keep chasing these huge scores in the 4th innings shows something amazing. Duckett and Crawley were immense. Duckett will get all the credit and deservedly so, but I think Crawley's innings absorbing the pressure and some probing new ball bowling in difficult conditions does show there is a bit more to him than just put your foot down and smack.

This was an excellent test match but I honestly do not see any other two sides contriving a result on such a flat pitch, even with the overhead at times helping some swing to some extent. England gave India a huge advantage at the toss and India were just not good enough to take it up. England, on the other hand, took every advantage India handed back to them and built on it and that is why they have won with 5 wickets in the hut. That said, this was a game where the result could have gone either way going into the last session and that usually means a very good test match. Two flawed teams ended up giving us a really good match and the team that made the lesser mistakes won. :)

For India, this does not hurt as bad as the BG test losses. Quite a lot of the balls and nicks went just where the fielders were not, even outside of the 6 or so dropped chances we gave England in this game. The bowling attack is worrying but one good sign I picked up on, is that they seemed to improve as the game went on. The bowling outside of Bumrah, the captaincy, the fields etc. Long way to go but I feel the signs are good. In a way, this almost feels like the first test when Virat was captain back in Australia. I hope we search hard and find the right bowlers to make this team better, soon.

For England, this was a great great win but the fact that you had to work so hard to beat a very middling Indian side that is in transition, with such a woeful bowling attack, does not augur well for the Ashes. I like the look of Smith as the wicket-keeper and feel he has a bit more to him. Brook is a great talent but sometimes too lippy for his own good. As long as these guys can stay grounded and not end up buying their own hype, they should win this series. But for the Ashes, unless they find some really good bowlers, they are gonna struggle. Both these sides are well off the pace of Aus and South Africa. And probably New Zealand as well.

Bit unlucky in the first couple of hours of play today to not get a wicket but the bowling and fielding was inspired thereafter. Duckett is pretty awesome tbf . If India can't win a test after that good of a day 1, they aren't coming close to winning a test this tour.

Huh. Only one of those I could've named was Kohli, because (unless I'm barking completely up the wrong tree) Davey Warner also got twins tons for the winning side.

Pant not even the first keeper to have the distinction.

Brilliant chase by England and I take back what I said about them choosing to bowl first. Hope this is the flattest pitch of the season though. No more of this please.

Boy was I ever way way off. Well done England !!
@Burgey See? I told you, names were a bit different, rather than Root-Brook it was Creepy-Shorty who did most of the work and then Root came in and carefully guided the chase to a win with a cameo from Jamie but still. Harry lad didn't even have to do anything.

I'm suprised this caught all the crap it did even though it didn't work out. This isn't like Nasser going against the grain in Brisbane for no reason and getting immediately punished, the facts and figures back up chasing here. As mentioned earlier in the thread, there's only something in it for the bowlers when it's fresh or when it's damp, and big 4th innings aren't uncommon. This is England's 6th consecutive win at Headingley and they've batted second every time.

But really I don't think the toss mattered at all much. Both sides have better batting than bowling and the team that dropped it more lost.

India looked well on top for large stretches, it’s not all doom and gloom for them especially in the batting department, but the bowling doesn’t look the most threatening especially when Bumrah isn’t playing, having lost one game without him you wonder if they’ll push him to play 4, maybe even 5 games this series
