I agree with you that Ponting is better but don’t agree that SR is definitive between two guys averaging the same. If you get two players who average around the same, and one has a lower SR but has done better against top attacks and overseas then I’m picking them.

Sure, then adjust for that then. Average it out so home & away has 50% weighting each.

Tacking on a bonus for away records does nothing but obscure results. It doesn't reward performing better away, it punishes for performing at home. It's nonsensical.

Only reason to do it is if it's a personal choice, which is fine, but it's not going to get objectively more accurate results.

I see the argument that fast-scoring is more impactful, but don’t think scoring fast rather than at a balanced/attritional tempo is necessarily harder for everyone.

This guy gets it. Say I average about 30 striking at over 100. I could try and score slower and still not average over 30 because it's not my natural game. I could even average less by being less aggressive. This is more common than a lot of people think.

I think what is generally true is that you can manage to play more balls if you bat slower - every batsman in history tends to try and bat slower if all they need to do is survive, that obviously doesn't optimize for runs though - for which a specific SR might be more suitable according to a persons style.

Yeah definitely easier to occupy the crease when batting cautiously. Especially on slow flat pitches. But producing more runs throughout a career at an attritional tempo being easier for everyone than producing runs at a quick tempo I’m not convinced by. The theory is correct in some cases.

Tendulkar’s peak stands out to me(along with Bradman‘sobviously), because he faced much better bowling on average than any other batsmen in the top ten, scored 7000+ at the average of 63. Did quite at home, and away from home(except SA, where he was mediocre tho, not as bad as Ponting in India).Only Sanga and Kallis outscore him by much at similar averages, but the eras in which they hit their peak were significantly better for batting, both in terms of bowling attacks and pitches.

I just prefer to have Hobbs x Sutcliffe opening cos its awesome and others underrate him and they already played wonderfully together. I’ll always have Hutton at first drop in an England XI in that case though.
