How good was Graeme Pollock ?

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
In some alternate world South Africa - Windies in 70's could have been sports greatest rivalry given the politics behind it.
The WI Rebel XI beat SA despite having a mediocre batting lineup. Might have been a closer than matches with other countries, but eighties WI should still have prevailed fairly consistently.

By 80's WI was comfortably a better side the likes of Barry Richards, Pollock, Proctor, Van Birjl, Barlow were all on the worng side of 30's only Clive Rice was in his peak. The next generation was not as good most likely lack of international cricket hampered their development but 70's especially 75-79 would have been a real battle in early 70's SA was a better side.

Probably very good. Of limited footage of him the only time I have see hin struggle was against Wi rebel team, where Ezra Mosely and Franklyn Stephenson were roughing him up with some bouncers. Only other time was in a legends cricket match in 1992 or 1993 when innocous legspinner fooled him few times and got him out with a slider.

Him against Lillee / Thmpson, WI pace jaggernaut and Hadlee would have been interesting.

Yeah he said to have a weakness against short ball. Barry Richards briefly mentions that in the interview below.

Lillee thought that too and rated Barry higher

Keep in mind Pollock didn’t play against mainstream players all that much other than his test career and Australia vs World Xi in 1970 and then in late 80s during rebel tours when he was in his 40s. He mainly played in Currie Cup and from everything I have read, the standard of that league was pretty high with plenty of sporting tracks.

On the other hand, people saw plenty of Richards in county cricket. So, there might be perception bias at play. Also, Pollock did well in those rebel tours against WI.

Even as a 50 year old you could tell he was insanely good, especially after getting his eye in. So still at the crease and ferocious against the short ball.

More than decent SA batting line up that

always thought Peter Kirsten was a very good player tbh

****ing Garth le roux. Terrorised Rod Marsh with his Yorkers in WSC
According to Proctor, spell from Garth le roux in WSC was as fast as any he has seen anyone bowl in his career.

Garth le roux had really good stats in the rebel tests shame a lot of these great Saffers never played test cricket.
