Is Sehwag the greatest batsman on subcontinent wickets?

Border wasn’t racist. He provided alms to the poor and needy of India ffs. More than what their own selfish spud players have ever done for them

For some reason YK never comes to mind in the discussions of best batsmen, despite him being phenomenal for Pakistan all through the 00s and 10s and keeping us competitive in most places.
The thing about YK's record in the UAE is he went big against all comers there, India excepted. Sluggish pitches, sure, but that is somewhat offset by the variety of bowling he had to face from the world over. That's a unique set of circumstances and should count in his favor over other contenders.

Sehwag
Gavaskar
Lara
Tendulkar
Younis

That to me would be a daunting top 5 to bowl to in the SC. By the by, it's a pity we didn't get to see more of Lara in India. Fairly certain he would've racked up some huge scores post-2000.

Sehwag's SR gives him an edge here AFAIC. Its one thing to score that many runs that consistently but also to score them that quick means you are always ensuring your team has a chance to win even on the deadest of tracks.
Yes, also the fact that he has a triple ton in Pakistan and a double ton in Sri Lanka that both led to victories. His 201* was one of the innings of the decade.

I would wonder why Inzimam cant be considered? Pretty good record against Murali and Kumble.

Surprisingly Damien Martyn hasn't been mentioned. Averaged 50 against peak Murali, Kumble, Harbhajan on proper spinning wickets.

Led Australia to 3-0 victory in SL and 2-1 victory in IND in 2004.

The biggest case for Sehwag - especially on these dead tracks - is his insane SR.

His average is fairly comparable to others. But if you’re scoring your runs at 80+ that’s ridiculous.

Not bad for a bloke raised in Perth. His overall away record is also excellent. Just didn't do all that much at home

Sehwag's poor second innings record is a pretty big hole. Still, his SR probably gives him an edge over the others imo.

He was to IND, what Laxman was to Aus.
Also did well in 2006 champions trophy here iirc.

Martyn doesn't compare to the very best of SC batsman at playing in Asia, but his achievement was especially notable given where he came from. As Gob mentioned he grew up on hard, fast, bouncy Perth and for most of his career was considered not a particularly good player of spin. He did something before those 2004 tours, IIRC it was mostly about staying back in the crease and using length, to basically become a great player of spin seemingly almost overnight. It was an incredible mental achievement.
