Which bowler is most difficult to face in their ideal conditions?

@ataraxia not sure why the suggestion of Lohmann deserves a laughing face. Fact is of all the situations that have actually arisen (as opposed to a hypothetical like Murali or Marshall bowling on a Brisbane sticky) it's got to be the quickish finger spinners or medium pacers on a wet or sticky pitch like Lohmann, Rhodes early in his career, Barnes, Verity, Lock etc. Teams which had a couple of that sort of bowler could regularly dispose of decent batting sides for under 100.

The exact reason I'd say Unedrwood, Chandra and Kumble would be the toughest assignment. Youngish Kumble is most likely to be the fastest among above three.

I mean AFAIK Lohmann is the correct answer to the thread (unless we go back pre-Grace) but it just came as a surprise for me to see his name after all the modern players beforehand.

Lohmann only took 4 wickets per game at home. Yes he averaged 14.45, but I wouldn’t at all consider anyone under 5.5 wickets per game (maybe even 6) considering Murali’s long term stats. Lohmann also played 9 games at home for those stats, I don’t see how he can remotely be considered when it’s 9 games and 4wpm. Not his fault he played so little against one team, but just look at Murali’s stats especially wpm and at under 20…

To conclude (last time I’ll open the thread even if I’m alerted of being quoted) tons of players being mentioned have completely irrelevant stats compared to Murali, lots of emotional posters here not being sensible it seems (on this topic).

Home wasn't necessarily his ideal conditions. If, rather than cherry-picking, we look at his whole Test career, that's a WPM of 6.2 and an average of 10.75. If we look at his FC career, that's 283 matches, 6.3 WPM and averaging 13.73. I dunno, that seems pretty unplayable to me.

In Lohmann's time runs per wicket was much lower than in the present. It was not the same game, and comparisons to are often fruitless.

Put Akthar on a matting wicket and let him bowl to pre WW players and he will kill a dozen readily.
