IMO, Matthew Elliott was the unluckiest of the lost generation of Australian batsmen from the 90s/00s

Queensland legit did doctor the wickets. They would usually pick 4 fast bowlers (and they would be 4 of the best in the country) and boss the conditions.

Then when they host the Shield final (needing just a draw) it would magically become the roadiest road that ever roaded

And yet Queensland had 3 batsmen with shield averages over 40, with one of those (Hayden) averaging 55 in the era. The other opener, Maher, averaged 39. All of this suggests that either Queensland had batsmen who were extremely underrated or the green Gabba wicket narrative was overplayed.

I know Taylor tended to try and write off Queensland's players because of "green pitches" but never looked at the flip side - that their batsmen must have been excellent. And I guess that's reflected in the 5 wins in 8 years.

Symonds too probably averaged pretty high around then right? They had a pretty awesome top 5 and bowling attack when at full strength around then

Hayden
Maher
Love
Law
Symonds
Perren?
Healy/Seccombe
Bichel
Kasper
Noffke?
Dale

Just lacking a notable spinner I guess

I don't recall Symonds being particularly good in the Shield. I'd be surprised if he averaged 40 pre-2003.

A few Qld batters average probably suffered. Maher was better than his average of 39 suggests. Law too. Hayden overcame it but he was one of the best opening batsmen in Test cricket so bit of an outlier

Maybe I'm influenced by my low grade club days (only got officials for finals). If you don't walk for a nick when your teammate is umpire you're forcing him into a pretty **** position. He's either called a traitor for giving you out or a cheat for not. Shaped my view on walking

Everyone in my side agreed we'd happily pay 10 bucks each for an umpire we all hated it that much. But there simply weren't enough working for the lower grades. Just nobody wants to do it I guess coz of the abuse

Haha what kind of bullshit is this

If someone doesn't like being given out caught behind maybe they shouldn't ****ing edge it

Calling someone else a traitor because of your own inadequacy is absolutely weak as piss

There's just a sense of look after your own. Every team seems to do it. LBWs are never given unless they're plum and it's like the 3rd time someone's been hit on the pads. Bowled and outfield catches are like the only way to get dismissed. It's pretty toxic and made me quit

I did this for a run out when my teammate was at square leg was lost in his thoughts, and not watching. I was out by a mile and I didn't walk, the opposition cracked the ***** and sent him off.

I think of that every time I'm forced to umpire now. It's a terrifying gig.

Yeah I hate this stuff, just give decisions as you see them.

Elliott looked like a sure thing to be a long term opener for Australia during those SA and England tours of 1997. Had a very solid technique, excellent against the short ball and could play long innings.

But he just fell off a cliff after that; apart from the Hobart ton against NZ didnt reach 50 in any of his last 11 Tests; seemed to become increasingly stodgy as his career wore on.

Have only seen this implied rather than confirmed (Aussie posters would have a better idea), but Elliott was apparently an introverted sort and really didn't buy into the baggy green-worshipping team bonding thing which was the culture cemented by Steve Waugh. Recall reading (don't remember where) that he was pretty much a loner during that 1999 West Indies tour and that plus his lack of runs pretty much sealed the deal as far as Waugh was concerned.
Yeah, I've heard various rumours over the years about what went wrong off-field on that tour but something obviously did; iirc he lost his national contract after that year.

Not a coincidence that Elliott's one Test after that 1999 tour was after Waugh had retired.

Well yeah if you're umpired by players on your own team . . . that's obviously a completely different issue

Sounds like you played in a competition of cheaters. This can't be normal.

Never even noticed that. It was literally just months after it happened too.

bro this is everywhere.

you get absolutely sawn off by your mate then the other team decides to treat club seconds like the world cup final and become as deaf as sachin tendulkar when their players smash the leather off it.
