(not that these top-7s actually played together, but yano.) Who are you having? Or would you rather tear your eyes out with sharp instruments rather than watching either?

This lot actually did play a Test in 95

Atherton
Stewart
Hick
Thorpe
Smith
Ramprakash

Stewart was opening and keeping which was obviously a brilliant idea...

We were very funkeh with the openers in 95.

Robin Smith had a go, as did Stewart (in keeper/batsman mode), NV Knight, Crawley and Gallian.

We can get a good idea buy trying to cobble it together

yeah im taking 95. 2q has the best individuals, but you're not turning down the consistency of atherton, stewart, thorpe and smith

95 looks way better on paper. Could be rose-tinted glasses though. They certainly loved to lose

1995 was one of England's better years around that time: they had 3 wins, 7 draws and 3 losses against Aus (+1=1-1), WI (+2=2-2) and SA (=4).

90s England had a lot of very talented players, they were just a terribly run international outfit.

The current day England outfit is probably one of the most professional outfits out there but are lacking in genuine batting talent. They've got guys who can do a job, more so in white-ball cricket, but Root and Stokes aside lack 'proper' batsmen.

Stokes only averages 37 in tests. The rest are in touching distance of his average but Root averages nearly 49. Considering this I don't think you can call Root and Stokes the only proper batsmen. We can't have Stokes in Root's category, he's not even close to that. Better would be calling Root the only proper batsman or not making the point at all.

In the last 3 years or so Stokes has averaged 45 (while Root has averaged 44). His career overage is misleading. Stokes is very much on Root's level as a Test batsman now

Yeah Stokes looks like a man assured when he walks out to bat. Biggest batting threat in the side these days
