2020/21 New Zealand Domestic Season

I don't think leaving is a problem there's no way anyone would have been able to produce as many runs as he has done at basin without proper defence and leave.
Well the minnow-bashing of Kuggs, Fisher and Baker will never tell us if he has that truly elite level of leaving. I mean the standard that's so elite and so good, it could make a national coach regret even running with a first dozen Test outings for RR where he's been converted into an all-rounder.

I do note (via the NZC scorecard's stats) that just five of his 138 runs vs. ND last round were against Wagner's bowling. Some credit to Georgeson for utterly dropping anchor at one end and blunting two Wagner spells.

thats starchy stuff from georgeson. wagners intensity in some ways is a better test of a young batsman than southee, boult, jamieson etc bowling deliveries a top order bat cant do much about.

According to paper today Rippon is the leading wicket taker in Plunket Shield? Also, that century for Ravindra has apparently confirmed his place for the England tour.

This seems quite late to be playing the last round of Plunket Shield, although the weather seems fine for it. Nice to see Leopard getting a game for CD batting at 7. Thorn Parkes hasn't been able to break through for ND yet. Otago should try to lure them south.

Are u sure u read that right?

Because Will Williams is leading wicket taker going in to this last round. Rippon 11th equal.

what would your 20 man squads for england be?

latham
conway
kane
ross
nicholls
watling
cdg
jamieson
southee
wagner
boult

ferguson
henry
williams
ajaz
somerville
blundell
mitchell
young
ravindra

we might need an entire spare bowling attack (thanks ipl) and i think williams could do some excellent trolling with the cheat ball. would not begrudge phillips a run if they chose an extra bat instead. mark chapman, doug bracewell, jimmy neesham, fraser sheat, mcconchie and santa all in the mix for spots 19 and 20.

I think they'll play it safe and take

latham
conway
kane
ross
nicholls
watling
jamieson
southee
wagner
boult
Darryl Mitchell
Glenn Phillips
Blundell
Ajaz
Somerville
Will Young
Santner
Henry
Ravindra

Phillips got to be there given how he bowled in the T20s and his red hot form with the bat.

Santner will be there 100% Kane will probably pick Santner ahead of everyone.

Don't think they'll rush Lockie to red ball cricket. He needs to get loads in and without having played first class it'll be a huge risk. Not the performance but the keep him injury free would be hard.

This season Ravindra scored 2 100s, 1 50+ vs west indies for NZ A and like 80 or something vs pakistan from memory. Then to top it off 6 fer vs WI A and a recent 100 vs ND. Can't ignore that kind of numbers. I'm not surprised if he's picked.

I'd love to see them take Ben Sears but he's not in discussion at all by the looks of it. Didn't help he plays a first class game and then tested for the next one.

Rippon although is a good player can't see him making the red ball side. Maybe a chance for white ball later in the year.

Truth is most of them won't be playing. Good holiday if you have no family, if you do then quartine will suck the life out of them.

Rob O'Donnell in some serious batting form at the moment. Has scored two hundreds and a 90+ in his last three innings.

Aces persisting with him paying off handsomely.

A T20 ton in September, but not really an undisputed master of all English second division attacks in all formats yet. Three 100s and six 50s over the years, career average is 31.5.

The kind of updates Otago were posting last year I was thinking he's averaging 75+ in county.

His last four FC innings: 128, 93, 107*, 100*

Not a bad run of form for a guy that was averaging like 28-29 after 52 games.

We only need cover for Boult and Jamieson for the first test only I presume? If they're going to pick both Phillips and Ravindra, one of Ajaz and/or Somerville will miss out. I don't think Ajaz will miss out.

He's quite young for someone that's played that many first class games.

He led under 19s in 2014 if I remember correctly. Probably debuted right after for aces.

I assume the 12 for the WTC final will be conservative, using the 4 seamer attack that has worked so well, with de Grandhomme (Mitchell injury cover) or Santner as all rounder depending on conditions. Conway and Blundell will probably have a shootout in the FC game vs Somerset (and perhaps 1st test vs Eng with Latham at #3) to claim the 2nd opener spot. I would pick Blundell as keeper batting #6 ahead of Watling but this won't happen. There will be a specialist spinner in the squad, but pitch will need to be the colour of mud before they are picked ahead of Jamieson for the WTC final. Perhaps the spinner might get a game vs England as the selectors cover absent IPL players and limit workload for de Grandhomme, Southee and Wagner.

So WTC final 12:
Latham Conway Williamson* Taylor Nicholls Watling+ de Grandhomme (Santner) Jamieson Southee Wagner Boult

Injury cover Young Mitchell Blundell Henry Patel. Leaves 3 spots to fill the 20. Suspect they may choose an extra seamer then some like-for-like cover for IPL players, perhaps Bracewell (extra seamer) + Ravindra (sub for Santner) + Nuttall (sub for Boult).

For 1st test vs Eng I assume Williamson Santner Jamieson Boult not available due to IPL finals:
Latham* Conway Young Taylor Nicholls Watling+ de Grandhomme (Ravindra) Southee Wagner Henry Bracewell

and touring squad:

Latham
Conway
Blundell

Williamson* (IPL)
Taylor
Nicholls
Young
de Grandhomme
Mitchell

Watling

Santner (batting all rounder) (IPL)
Ravindra (batting all rounder)
Patel

Southee
Boult (IPL)
Jamieson (IPL)
Wagner
Henry
Bracewell
Nuttall

Surprised Duffy and Nathan Smith (a pair that I have in my head as palpably the best domestic pacers when there's nothing to be gained from hitting the deck the hardest yet there's a good amount in the air) aren't making a 20-man tour of England. I understand it with Smith I suppose (how many CdG and Mitchell understudies are really needed).

dtopping watling for blundell is bold anywhere, but especially in england. how come?

BJ diminishing returns with the bat. Averaging 19 since start of tour to Aussie late 2019. Has looked scratchy in post-Christmas Plunket Shield video footage. The clock is ticking. Sadly. Hope that I am proven wrong.

52 games is beyond persistence haha had his surname been different he'd be on the rest of the former Aces with 15-20 games who average below/nigh on 30 in red ball cricket. Credit to him though, he's hit a purple patch and is cashing in. I do have my EPOO x back end of season criticism multiplier on though, regardless, run are runs especially when looking completely out of form.
