2020/21 New Zealand Domestic Season

Rippon v Raval - who will win it for their side. With Astle retired from red ball and Sodhi favoured for short form, is Rippon next in line for a test spot if they want a wrist spinner (albeit left arm)?

Auckland didn't seem too bothered about getting there.

Gutted they didn't get a six off the last ball for a tied draw though.

Really surprised Auckland didn't bring that home, they only needed a run a ball for the last few overs. Ah well, I'll miss the domestic cricket season. Bring on the England tests.

2 games went to the wire, one a serious chase with a result and another very exciting draw. The draw was a great game to watch.

Serious runs by Jeet Raval and as good a knock by Will O'Donnell.

I had both going on two monitors on YouTube. For some reason the Auckland guys didn't try to take a chance against Rachin. He's quite an enterprising white ball bowler so he did do the containing job at one end but I'd have loved to see Sears bowl those overs no disrespect to Rachin. A good opportunity to brood another young paceman lost I thought.

Six wickets to Rachin this game and for the first time I saw him bowl more than 3-5 overs spell for firebirds. Maybe the runs in the previous game and wickets this game has sealed his spot in the side to UK. Wonder if Phillips is going to make the side. No doubt Somerville should. Showed some good form with the bat and ball.

Rippon was on the money most of the times too just that Jeet was on top of his game. Doubt if Rippon will be preferred ahead of Rachin or Somerville but he's good enough to make the black caps at some point in time particularly in white ball cricket.

Yeah, more than anything I think Sommerville's season ER of 2.6 will have earned him some points with the selectors and probably see him stay out in front of Ajaz should they decide that a specialist is needed at any point in the next 12 months.

Raval's season average of 45 is a pretty solid recovery, though I can't imagine that it's enough to put him ahead of Conway or probably even Blundell at this point. Still, he's got a few years left in him so still some potential of a recall if he can double up next year.

EDIT: Just read in the ODT that Raval was the beneficiary of a Nicholls-esque run of good luck. Three dropped chances (though admittedly one sounds more like a half chance) and a missed stumping. Still, you have to give him some credit for making it count.

Rachin getting some press today in the Herald, which makes me think he's probably in.

Depends entirely on how many left handers there are in the opponent if they were to pick Somerville. Is Somerville a better bat than Ajaz? I know he can definitely hang around but but so sure about Ajaz.

Having Rachin in the lineup will give that cover if there are more right handers. Ideal to see him bat at no 6

Conway is a must in the lineup. Ideally open as Kane will take 3 anyways.

I'd have Blundell at Young's expense. I love young but can't have Young, Rachin and Blundell all playing.

India has few lefties. England not so many from memory.

Glad to see this, the state of spin stocks has been a worry for some time and almost a redundancy when playing home tests. Both Somerville and Ajaz should be in serious consideration for the India tour, possibly even both in the same XI.

Definitely for the idea of Rachin at no.6 as an allrounder, but only for the England and India tours where he'll have a definite role to play. Beyond that would hope he's in a position to graduate to opener, while Conway slides down to the middle order.

Plunket Shield.

Top Run Scorer: Joe Carter
Top Wicket Taker: Will Williams

Best batting average: Cam Fletcher
Best bowling average: Kyle Jamieson

Of the spin bowlers. Top wicket take was Rippon, and best average was Delport.
Rippon had a great tournament as an allrounder actually, as was also the 7th highest run scorer with the bat and 7th highest wicket taker.

Final round of Plunket Shield was interesting, don't feel like I've had a chance to catch up on it yet.

Some good batting numbers for the season but don't know that the bowling quality looks very promising for NZ. Top three wicket-takers were the very-mediums of Williams and Sheat, plus Rae picking up 29 wickets at a high average - seems unlikely that any will go to the next level. R Toole looks in a similar boat. The real problem is that Nuttall and Tickner - two who are definitely PONIs - haven't progressed. Might seem harsh on Tickner who took 23 wickets at 25, but don't recall being impressed by the wicket highlights, disproportionate number of tail enders and relatively high RPO. I guess it's ok-ish.

Of the top dozen wicket takers accross the PS this season, the only ones you think might push for an NZ place, or are good reserves to have right now are Duffy, Rippon and maybe Tickner.

We could really do with Sears having a great season next year.

Only one spinner in the top 10 bowlers. Shows how the decks were this season. Not one bowler from Wellington in the top 10. This is where we struggled.

Fast bowlers - McPeake 200 overs @ 29, Newton 133 overs @ 26, Sears 95 overs @ 31, Gibson 119 overs @ 35, Bennett 68 overs @ 36, Snedden 65 overs @ 27, Van Beek 126 overs @ 51, Georgeson 25 overs @ 16

Spinners - Bracewell bowled 157 overs @ 54.77 average, Ravindra 73 overs @ 31.50 average and Younghusband 69 overs @ 78.66 average...

We need some wicket taking bowlers prompto. I thought Sears was sensational but probably I was thinking about his form in super smash and ford trophy.

Troy Johnson averaged 73 with the bat.. he's coming along quite nicely. He was the top batter in Wellington in school cricket. Had couple of not so great years after but he's now doing real well. Luke Georgeson is a capable batsman at the top of the order. Slow scoring but has unbelievable patience. One to build on definitely.

Bhula had a good ford trophy but hasn't been able to perform in red ball cricket so far.

Need to find some batters as well. Conway, Blundell, Ravindra won't be coming back soon to firebirds.
