*Official* England in New Zealand 2019

But anyhow; proper NZ XI:

Latham
Conway
Williamson
Taylor
Nicholls
Watling
Stokes
Santa
Waggie
Boulty
Fergie

International Vice-Captain
^^ That's an NZ and SAF XI.

2 actual genuine Saffas. And if Stokes is a kiwi, then Watling is just as South African.

I guess I’d go Stokes as well if push came to shove, but CDG has a better record in both disciplines. Feels harsh to leave him out of a combined XI.

Archer's been around for all of 5 minutes. Great prospect for sure but his one wicket from a batsman set on 200 trying to get quick runs is wholly underwhelming. Outbowled by Curran.

Based on returns in the last couple of years:

1. Burns
2. Latham
3. Williamson*
4. Nicholls
5. Stokes
6. Watling+
7. de Grandhomme
8. Leach/Somerville/Patel
9. Wagner
10. Boult
11. Anderson

Southee not being a southpaw runs against him. Wanted a L/R opening bowling combo.

I appreciate Root has had a fall from grace, 18 months to two years ago he was talked in the same breath as Smith, Williamson and Kohli and now he’s not making a combined England/NZ XI ? I guess if the side is picked solely on recent numbers that’d be fair enough, but if you were picking a side to win a Test match he’d surely be in there somewhere ? I’m not having de Grandhomme is a better bat.

Root looks like a Lesbian who has smoked enough cigarettes to be one of the warning advertisements on packs of 20.

de Grandhomme looks like a lumberjack with 6 kids, you want that kind of power in your combined squad. Not the former.

de Grandhomme isn't a better bat but he isn't being picked as a specialist bat.

As it stands, in the last two years there is a gulf between the top order batsman of both countries. No English bat averages more than 40. 3 kiwis average 60 or more. If we were picking on career, sure Root would get in as would Broad and probably Ali as the spinner. But the last 24 months? Root has been weighed down by captaincy and underperforming with the bat. I'd prefer Stokes to him as a specialist bat. His bowling becomes a bonus.

I’d still back him to score runs if this side was playing tomorrow. Root can slip in at four, and shunt everyone else down a spot leaving de Grandhomme out. Stokes is the fifth bowler and Root and Williamson as part-time options.

Despite leaving him out, I am a fan of the big Kiwi all-rounder, made the absolute most of the talent he has.
