The best pure wicketkeeper of all time

Discussion around the best pure wicketkeeper of all time, disregarding batting ability altogether.

Throw some names and rationale around.

Only going by the ones I’ve seen a lot of it’s hard to separate Allan Knott and Bob Taylor. Both top class at everything with different slightly higher qualities. Knott had the longer Test career due to his superior batting. But this wasn’t a Russell and Stewart situation where a world class keeper was dumped for a batsman wearing gloves. Knott and Taylor were two great keepers. After that Wasim Bari who is underrated and Healy.

Its always going to be an impossible discussion this one, basically everyone will pick the best one they’ve seen, making it impossible to compare across eras, due to lack of relevant stats for keepers. One thing I’ve always found interesting though is Oldfield’s percentage of stumpings. Seems quite insane, and was not just at test level.

Kept to a huge proportion spin bowling, but I can imagine the same goes with keepers in other countries like India too.

Mhm, even so the closest to him Evans, Kirmani and Dhoni all played with some great spinners, yet in ~90 tests each did not come close to him.

Ian Healy was excellent. Being such a bad commentator sort of clouds his legacy imo. As does Gilly coming straight after him and being such a complete package.

Think it’s interesting that generally, with exceptions, the respect that keepers get is directly linked to how long ago they played.
