What happened to Chandimal?
He was scapegoated for the disastrous results the team was churning out following the SA home series, he was also in poor form for much of it. Has completely fallen out of favour for the moment but will be back at some point

Think there's a spot for DDS due to his dramatically improved bowling
He's a quality batsman too, just hasn't been consistent, him at 7 and bowling looks good to me, but that requires Dickwella at 6 and someone batting out of position as 2nd opener, unless DdS opens himself, but he hasn't really succeeded at test level in the top order.

If Dickwella isn't good enough to bat six then he probably shouldn't be playing because Kusal Perera and Chandimal certainly are and they aren't substantial drop offs in terms of keeping ability. Dickwella has been decent in Tests but the keeping stocks are such that he really needs to be able to hold his place on batting to justify it.

I'd probably open with Mendis. His record there is actually vastly better than it is in the middle order, and while I think he's probably better off in the middle order despite that, it's worth a go to avoid having to pick a spud opener.

Mendis is the lynchpin of our batting future, can't mess around with him. The way Dimuth and Kusal Perera combined in the WC with their opposing styles makes me think Avishka could form a pretty dynamic duo with him, it's a shame Kaushal Silva dropped off so bad, they used to be a really solid opening pair

Dickwella could bat 6, but his style is more no.7, was good at marshalling the tail and farming the strike when he got going a few times in NZ and Australia

 at Mahmudullah trying to do a Kedar Jadhav impersonation and bowling horrible pies that got smashed. Just bowl properly man, there can only be one Jadhav.

Haha did he? It's weird for a tall bowler to try impersonate Kedar. You need to be really short to go underground like Kedar.

Was hoping Shanaka would do a little more, would be nice if he could unseat Thisara on a more permanent basis.

Everyone getting a start bar Avishka, only Matthews able to really convert into something meaningful, much better signs for Kusal Mendis through this series though which is crucial, I'm almost getting flashbacks to the 2000s when we had a really solid ODI batting line-up, would love to see these guys go on and really build a team together

Still don't think Mendis is ODI material. He plays at no. 4 and plays only 3 kinds of innings:

1. Fails i.e. gets out for a single-digit score
2. Stinks the innings by playing a 55 ball 30 or something
3. Does well in the middle-overs and gets out before the slog overs

Option number 3 is not bad, but is not great either to compensate for options 1 and 2.

Sarkar's bowling has improved so much. He hasn't scored big runs for a while but his bowling has quietly really come along, especially in the right conditions. He's still slow as **** but he owns it now and uses it to his advantage rather than just being a much slower version of a crap fast bowler.

Agree to an extent, but the guy is just too talented not to get it together, he has played some good knocks, the India game at the 2017 CT comes to mind

Can be pretty effective on this sort of surface

Yeah but Sarkar from two years ago would've steamed in and bowled 120km/hr long hops for six balls in a row, gone for 14 and then not bowled another over. He bowled some surprisingly good spells in the WC trying to get some movement and he bowled completely differently here again for some pretty effective returns. Really turning himself into an actual batting allrounder (if only he could make the runs he used to, anyway..)

He is somewhat like Rahane in that he's a talented player but hasn't figured out ODI batting yet. I would say Latham rather than Rahane but Latham has gained in ODI maturity in last 1 year or so.

They have dropped him from opening in this match, hopefully to no. 3.

Yeah, SL selectors need to be clear about setting his role in the side too, I think he would probably benefit from being given a long run in the side at 4 as well as playing alongside Matthews, Kusal and Dimuth for a decent period, I just can't see how he wouldn't come into our core ODI and test plans in terms of batting

Rajitha looks a million bucks when he gets the ball swinging, be good if he could develop some death bowling lengths to go with it, can't have all our fast bowling stock going the way of Lakmal - ie into test specialist territory

Akila has looked awesome in this series. The timing of his report etc couldn't have been worse with him missing the World Cup due to it.

I wonder when he'll phase out the wrist spin from his game, having the googly is nice but he looks like a genuine off-spinner now, Dilruwan Perera's test career is surely over now

Probably never in limited overs cricket. Pretty much pointless if he plays Tests though.
