Australian captaincy succession order?

Red

Clarke and Haddin both struggling with injury. It's possible both could miss the next test.

Is this captaincy succession order right, or not?

Clarke

Haddin

Watson

Smith

Rogers

Warner

Evidently, when Clarke and Haddin were off the field in Sharjah, Rogers was in charge (over Warner, and Watson wasn't playing).

Rogers would be the obvious choice if Clarke and Haddin weren't there.

Watson and Warner don't necessarily strike one as having the mental acuity for captaincy.

Longer term, god knows. Rogers and Haddin both well into their late 30s. I guess Smith is the chap most assured of his place who one would back to be able to find his own arse with both hands, but he strikes one as quite callow, even for someone as young as he is.

I like the cut of Bailey's jib, but his test career was pretty much stillborn & specialist captains are a thing of the past, so the successor would likely come from the best XI.

I get the feeling they won't give Watson the captaincy because they're afraid that there is still a bit of a player rift and the problems between Clarke and Watson are likely still there, not to mention Watson is likely to break down during the match.

Warner is about the only guy you could say will have his spot in 5 years time... and it's hard putting the captaincy on a player who doesn't demand their own place.

Chris Rogers will never captain in a Test match - its just against the Australian way IMO. He might hold significant opinion on the field, but he would be telling a younger guy such as his opening partner Warner what to do, rather than being the main man.

If Clarke were suddenly to break his leg before the WC I can totally see Haddin taking over. He'll be recalled just to be captain.

How could you say no to a guy who has with the big show opening with bat and ball?

Watson has already captained a test when Clarke was out so I'd be surprised to see anyone but him or the fresh blood option of Smith (or less likely Warner).

I read the list and immediately thought "Warner is too short to be a captain." Not sure if I should feel bad or not.

If Haddin is captain this summer, I'm guessing they have no clear idea who will be Clarke's long term successor?

Jeez, this week's Shield matches just got a whole lot more interesting and important with Clarke being out.

Rogers
Warner
Doolan
TPC
Watson
MMarsh/ Burns/ Mr Ed (is he fit?)
Haddin (Would have been on his last legs if not for Clarke's injury imo)
Johnson
Harris
Siddle/ Hazelwood
Lyon

That's got to be the least credentialed Australian batting line up since the mid 80s. India's best chance to win a series here since 85-86.

If it's that bad it's time to give up the short format stuff. So Howard decides the captain now?

Surely if Clarke is out for the whole summer then they just appoint Smitteh? Poor call from CA if true.

If we assume the top 5 might be as Burgey said...

Rogers
Warner
Doolan
TPC
Watson

...which I think it will be now that Clarke is out (surely Doolan keeps his spot now), is it wise to have MMarsh at #6?

I don't think it is. We need a proper batsman, not a young AR. In which case, who is the best batsman in the country outside of the top 5? I really think we should consolidate our batting. Need to get over this AR ****.

I agree with you, I just think they'll both play. The other option is they play both and an extra batsman, relying on the two all rounders to do the third quick's job. I don't like that idea either ftr.

Who plays at six then? Burns? Horse head? Hope they don't go for a Victorian, but you wonder if White might get back in for his experience at FC level. FMD I reckon Haddin is lucky this has happened. I could have seen Nev in there for the Gabba if Clarke was fit.
