Not a great start from the Pears.

Barker has come back from his injury well, shame he got it, was interested to see whether he could be pushing for International honors this year.

Was thinking this earlier actually. A lot of grumbling about our 3rd seamer options at the moment so will be interesting to see if someone makes a debut before the end of the series in Australia.

Rankin seems to be the favourite to do so right now but would be interesting to see if Barker or maybe Jordan could come through, neither has played Lions have they so it would be unusual. Must be a good while since a pace bowler made his test debut?

Yeah, Shahzad was the last. Didn't do too badly in his Test debut either, took 4/63 in the match, including the wickets of Shakib and Ashraful. Shame he went off the boil due to injuries and other reasons really, looked a promising bowler. Has a pretty good international record actually, did decently on Test debut, and has 17 wickets at 28 with an economy of 5 in ODi's. Doubt he'll ever be back though, will stay in the fast bowling one Test wonder group of the 2000's, alongside Amjad Khan, Darren Pattinson and Jon Lewis. Ridiculous really when you look back, that Amjad Khan and Darren Pattinson were given a Test cap ahead of Graham Onions, Tim Bresnan and Steven Finn.

Well they were seemingly considering Chris Wright and Dirtbag at one point, so things are desperate.

Wouldn't be that shocked if a Mills or Joverton was giving an extra berth to Oz.

Jordan is another one of course, fast, can bat, great fielder. Yet before this season was awful.

I don't think there is any need to take a youngster on the main tour as the academy/lions will probably be out there anyway.

Will be interesting to see if Mark Wood can continue his start to his career, has a very good record so far and bowls c90mph - from the same town as Harmison though. If he has a good second half of the season it would be good to see him go on the lions/academy tour

Mills, Wood, Overton, Topley would be a good group of youngish fast bowlers to send out there along with a couple of legitimate backups for the main squad bowlers (assuming we take Anderson, Broad, Finn, Tremlett, Bresnan, Onions in the main party)

You're probably right, I keep on thinking in old money when they talk about squads, the other tours will enable them to be available.

Yeah forgot about Wood, looks really good, hope Scaly can obsess over him, rather than mention the chance of Chris Rushworth ever playing for England......

Batting wise there is not as much young talent. We should see loins callups for the likes of Chopra & Ali, the usual suspects in the likes of Taylor (if not on the main tour), Stokes, Patel, Davies. Maybe Thakor gets a place?

Meanwhile looks like Alex Lees is heading for his third ton in his 8th game - the next Joe Root? Must have scored F all runs in his other 9 innings though.

Pitch at Old Trafford must be an absolute road if we are 224/2 - batting too slow to get all the batting points though

Luke Wells, perhaps?

Bizarre innings from Worcestershire. 18 for no wicket, then 6 wickets lost for 4 runs. Since when the 7th wicket has added 110.

Gloucs with a 17 year old offie making his first appearance, btw.

Jack Brooks? Looks like a bit of a **** with his stupid headband, but has a good record. Didn't have a great season last season, but been impressive this season, and managed good figures in 2011. Surprised Mark Davies never got a look in when we were struggling for seam bowlers around the late 2000's. Not the quickest by any means, but until 2009 had a ridiculously awesome record, and since his injury affected campaigns in 2009 and 2010 has gone back to taking his scalps at around 20 a piece. 9 wickets at 17 for the Lions too.

Brooks suffers from the same problem as Davies, seems injured much of the time, just when he's looking good.

I quite like David Willey, talking about crap hair and hairbands.

Picked up wickets but bowled absolute garbage - didn't see anything promising from him that day.

Shahzad was certainly wayward and fairly expensive, but he was quick, swung it, looked like a wicket taker and had a bit of passion about him which I liked. As it turned out, he was injury-prone, and bowled a lot of crap, which was punished by good batsmen, but when he first burst onto the scene I remember thinking he looked promising, certainly more promising than Amjad Khan anyway. I certainly wouldn't be advocating England selecting him again anytime soon though.

I'd be really tempted to give Mills or Joverton a go after Oz. The 3rd seamer spot is becoming a big problem and there are quite a lot of people who have been tried for awhile but don't look great, Finn being the main example. It's probably worth gambling on a youngster at some point and giving him a run.

Can't pick Mills yet though, I mean he hardly gets a game for Essex. Would definetly want to see him tour with Lions though.

Barker the most deserving of a go at the moment, can bat as well.
