Good to see Root carry on his good run, scoring runs in a knockout game is useful, shows he has a good head as well as talent. Just pray we get to see him on finals day and get to find out whether he can cope with that step up.

Clearly a genuine talent. He's a year or two younger than I'd want if Strauss does step down this year. Tricky call for the selectors if that does happen.

Didn't Basil's bro play FC cricket too? I'm sure there's a nature/nurture debate CW hasn't had yet about the cricketing dynasties.

Anyway, 50 for Root. Boy has a very attractive looking game, no doubt. Slight hint of Bell about his back cut, IMHO.
Haven't seen the lad myself but according to cricinfo his drive is reminiscent of his fellow Sheffielder Michael Vaughan.

Gorge flat six over the covers from Miller there.

Shantry's action is weirdsville, btw. Looks like he's bowling off the wrong foot, but actually seems to be on his right one, just such a flail of arms ang legs.

Yeesh. Miller liking it, whatever he's bowling. 24 off 5 balls.

Ideally Strauss carries on till after the Ashes double header (winning both) and retires then. Root with another 18 months behind him may be ready.

I will be very surprised if Strauss steps down before the conclusion of the next two Ashes series TBH.

But Root looks to have a calm head on his shoulders, and looks destined for national honours in due course.
