Really a good question, that. My thoughts basically went straight to Kamran's knock in Karachi '06 against India vs Akhtar's bowling to England in '05. I really can't decide.

The sublime bowling spell. Not so much when one player just bowls really, really well, but when a whole attack, the captain and the fielders together manage to bowl a quality batting side out on an embarrassingly flat pitch it's the best test cricket ever. I love when it's about finding that one more wicket from somewhere- a slower ball, or a brilliant catch or run-out, a vicious bouncer or yorker, and maintaining a line and length so accurate that batsmen are destined to nick one eventually. Building pressure in the field and striking at key moments to take a quality batting side down when everything is in their favour. Those performances are the ****.

This has got nothing to do with 'the innings' or 'the spell'. Love minefields more than the roads in general, and hence will love anything on the minefield over anything on the road.
Agree with this view completely and voted for the innings. I enjoy watching bowlers perform well in general and there is such an abject lack of minefields these days. Equally good to see a batsmen somehow managing to survive against some quality bowling as well (specially some short quick hostile stuff). Provides for the best sort of contest between bat and ball.

Great innings on a minefield > Great spell on a road > Great spell on a minefield > Great innings on a road

Took me awhile to decide on this one. And I don't even know why, but the great innings on a minefield just appeals to a little bit more. Innings like Sehwag vs Mendis (that double hundred he got), just stick out like a beacon, whereas you can look at a batting line up collapsing and wonder how they ****ed it all up.

On a side note, it'd be interesting to see how Indians feel on this generally. I have an interesting (controversial) theory that batting skill is valued and glamorized more by Indian fans compared to bowling (I include myself in this assessment). We've rarely had the luxury of more than one great bowler in our teams.

Tough for me. I enjoy a good spell of bowling more than a good innings, but I enjoy cricket in general so much more in bowler-friendly conditions. A good spell of bowling on a road can still often be pretty unattractive.

Although I find it incredibly tough to "enjoy" said bowling or batting if it's say Ponting/Johnson on the receiving end.

Whatever it takes!!!
I'd say the bowling spell, simply because of how magnificent is looks. Like the batsman are cruising and then suddenly one man turns it around, and all the players are hugging him/groping his arse etc. It is inspiring stuff.

Indeed. I'm sure Sangakkara's playing a wonderful knock, but seriously - 457-2?! What hope is there for the match from here?
