Andrew Johns Playing 20/20

I don't people should berate Katich, and automatically assume the worst. My take on it all was that he was trying to win the game - by maintaining the strike (i.e. looking for twos, fours and sixes only). I don't think he was protecting Johns or trying to make a point about the inclusion of a celebrity in the team.

I find it a bit hard to believe that Katich would have refused the singles solely on the merits of the game. One feels he was making a point about the inclusion of a player who can't bat or bowl in the lineup because he's a celebrity.
Agree with the last bit, makes sense, Katich is a good bloke.

Funnily enough johns said he was glad katich took the strike as he didn't want to face the fast bowler and get hurt.Maybe the newcastle crowd were actually baying for andrew johns' blood on the pitch:laugh: .
I'm sure there would have been a few Newcastle Knights officials breathing a bit easier after the game.

I like the cricinfo headline. "Redbacks win after Johns gamble fails." They make it sound like they picked him as a potential match winner.

Quote from an article about said event...

"For those whose postcode and IQ don't commence with four or its square root, Johns is a highly qualified rugby league halfback whose most recent competitive cricket experience was for a fifth-grade club in his home town of Newcastle.

He averaged just over 16 with the bat, and managed two wickets at more than 30 when he reportedly shared new-ball duties with a kelpie.

Given that the Blues were thrashed by an innings in their recent four-day match against Victoria and by nine wickets in the subsequent 50-over fixture, those credentials probably justify his inclusion."

8-)
To be fair to Joey Johns though, the kelpie had the season of his life. 7 hat-tricks and 4 9-fers in the season meant Joey was often left to pick up the scraps. He was the second highest wicket taker and just lost out on the batting average to 'sundries'.
Marvellous game of backyard cricket going on there...our old kelpie actually managed to catch us out sometimes, no joke, was a gun of a fielder as well, would chase down anything and bring it back to the bowler, slight cases of ball tampering need to be answered though.

Yes - Kelpie. Bit of star by the sounds of things. Ball might get covered in dog slobber but a bucket of water at each end would fix that. :p

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Katich did the right thing. If he had taken a single, and Johns had gotten out the next ball, then he'd be berated for taking a stupid single to lose NSW the game.

His gamble didn't pay off. Get over it.

I still love you Simon. Still the best tactical mind in the country, playing cricket.

its alrite that katich took the strike but with one ball to go at least he could have givin wat the crowd wanted they needed like 8 off the last ball.

Has anyone actually seen the over he bowled? 9 runs of the seventeenth over of a 20/20 isn't that bad really.
That's what i was thinking while i was hearing it on the news "Andrew Johns got hit all over the park in his only over in which he got hit for 9 runs" i mean it isn't that bad, a bad over imo in 20/20 would be about 15 runs.

Has katich ever been popular.
The whole andrew johns thing has proved to be very much a failure even if you consider katich wouldn't trust him with the strike.
The experiemnt never should have happened, newcastle fans will be turned off 20/20,and maybe if hauritz had played we would have won.It cheapened the game.
I don't quite understand the fuss really. It's not like he was picked for the final Ashes test. At what point was playing Andrew Johns going to be a success? I never expected to turn on the tv after the match and hear "Andrew Johns proved the difference in the 20/20 match today where he took 5/3 off 4 overs and steered NSW to victory slashing 45 off 6 balls".

Cheapened the game? It's 20/20...
