Lmao @ Sabbir Rahman channelling the Kohli let-my-bat-do-the-talking celebration. You average 25 in ODIs mate.

Having said that though it's quite surprising considering the technique and temperament he displayed today

Not Terrible
This summer
Neesham 204 @ 68 SR 182
10W @ 22.90 economy 5.38 - 5 overs a game

CDG 54 @ 13.50 SR 120
8W @ 34 economy 4.45 - 6-7 overs a game

Not exactly match losing bowling so far eh?

Exactly, I posted some similarly decent combined stats of the last 2 years earlier.

Southee, not only going to England but he will be in the starting XI
He was always going, but I doubt he's now in the XI. He missed 4 out of 5 Indian ODIs,2 of 3 Bangladesh ODIs and still bowled some serious **** in taking 6-for. Henry is the incumbent now. Although when you're playing 9 pool matches in a World Cup, do we think it'll be a best XI every time as per 2015 or a bit of rotation?

What a **** summer of cricket it's been. The most uncompetitive one-sided bore fests, save the Pakistan away Tests. And do we truly know where we stand as an ODI side going into the World Cup? If we do, it's not in a good way.

I really hate to say this, but there's something a little Amla-esque about his ODI record, although I do think he's better than Amla.

Don't get me wrong, great ODI bat, but his numbers do flatter him slightly.
Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.

I can't think of any reason his numbers flatter.

Has been a **** summer, but we do know where we stand. Somewhere between 3rd & 5th seed, with about a 1 in 4 chance of beating an India or England on a given day.

Will be disappointed if we don't make the semis.

How did we get around Henry's inability not to be cannon-fodder after his new ball spell?
But how is this any different to Southee? Does he get credit because he used to be a decent death bowler? Because he's not now. He didn't come back that well today, he doesn't hit the hole consistently or even try to, he doesn't have a good slower ball armoury...is he a better 2nd spell bowler than Henry? Maybe by virtue of not being as bad, but he's not good. Maybe if he got focused back on jamming reverse swinging yorkers liked worked so well at his peak, but he doesn't seem to want to.7-8

This is the argument I had for so long about Kyle Mills. Everyone wanted to say 'aw but he's **** at the death and with an older ball'. Well for ****'s sake, don't bowl him there. Bowl him 7-8 up front (Henry) where he's bowling with a new ball because there's one at both ends. If he doesn't bowl 10, well if you've got Boult, Ferguson, Santner, CdG, Neesham etc that may not matter. Or if you want to use those last two, use them to new batsmen when the opportunity arises. For years Millsy copped stick for being a poor death bowler when he was such a gun up front and we had this lack of awareness that he could actually bowl a majority up front and it wasn't against the rules.

I meant more entertainment. It's been such a crap summer of excitement. The Indian ODI series was the worst I can remember.

I'd say we are 5th or 6th. England India much, much better, Australia I'd even have above us, SA as well then there's us and Pakistan who'd need to lift to get in a semi.

now post the stats for the only odis that mattered

in a world cup likely to require serious stopping power from the bowlers, they are the clear weak links along with southee likely sneaking into the first choice team

Not sure why you're replying with Southee's name, since he wouldn't make my squad either and he's behind Henry in my pecking order.

So you want to limit Henry to having a good day & bowling 7-8-9 (or even 10) overs up front?

That's fine, but what about the days he sprays it early on? Which he is susceptible to doing. Or the days there's zero swing, it's a belter of a pitch, and you're facing top opposition? There's just no plan B with him . He's not someone you'd trust to bring on later.

He has very ordinary variations, a clearly telegraphed slower-ball, and as I said earlier, he bowls that natural length white-ball batsmen just love to launch, and is far more likely to bowl a big full-toss than a yorker.

I'd rather Bennett or Milne any day of the week, but I know Bennett's on the outer, and I'm not sure if Milne is fit.

As you keep saying, but name a team outside India who are going to have 5 top class ODI bowlers in their XI?

milne is fit and has played two t20s since returning to fitness. not sure 8 overs is trustworthy for a world cup campaign and i say that as a big fan of the worlds fastest gavin larsen.

southee's terrible with the new rock and the old, 6fer against a defeated bangers away from home in a dead rubber can go do one. when your options are limited and you have a guy who can run through the likes of the proper australia with a new ball available, you should probs pick him.

australia and south africa. pakistan and england aren't bad either.

i.e. the competition we should be measuring ourselves against outside asia, not sri lanka and bangladesh

The thing is Mills was a **** load more consistent than Henry in those 7-8 overs up front he bowled. Mills' was one of our top 5-6 ODI bowlers ever

All those sides have ordinary bowlers sharing 10 overs. None have 5 specialist bowlers, and would be interested if any of those teams' 5th bowling option have been any less economical than de Grand and Neesham have in the last 24 months. They've been going for about 5.2 an over combined.

The fact that we're having this discussion (Southee vs Henry vs others) is really a mess of NZ's making. The insistence of starting Southee and Boult in almost every ODI since 2015 has meant that Ferguson aside none of the other NZ pacers have made any strides in the positive direction. McCleneghan opting out was a bit of a loss as well. Milne is off the park too often to be a serious contender, while Bennett just doesn't seem to be on the selectors' radar.

Having said that I think Boult/Henry/Ferguson is a pretty good pace attack for most conditions and Southee is a fair enough reserve (given that he seems to be at his best when returning after being dropped each time).
