    IPL 2018: Retention Day (Jan 4) and Auction Weekend (Jan 27-28)

    As the title suggests, its time for the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League.

    While the tournament starts in April, the excitement already starts in Jan with teams requiring to submit their retentions by today, a full three weeks before the mega auction where most players are expected to be changing jerseys.

    A quick recap of the new rules: the salary cap has been increased to INR 80 crore (~USD 12.6m) with a max squad size of 25. Of this, no more than 8 can be be overseas players. Of course, as per existing rules, no more than 4 overseas players can be part of the Playing XI. Assuming a squad size of 22, that's an average of INR 3.64 crore that can be spent per player.

    Retention rules from today's Indian Express:

    The retention can be done in two ways: a) Retention b) Right to Match. Right to Match (RTM) is an option for the teams to retain a player by bidding for the player who has been sold in the player auction. A team has to spend the same amount in which the player is sold in the auction. A team which decides to not retain a player and the said player is bought by another team in the acution, the first team can access their RTM option and get the said player but for the amount in which the second team bought the said player.
    Direct retention is an option for teams to retain maximum of three players without using the RTM option. Three players retained by a team can have to match one of the following criteria. There are also specific salary caps which need to followed while retaining the players.

    * Maximum 3 capped Indian players
    * Maximum 2 overseas players
    * Maximum 2 uncapped players

    In a scenario where three players are retained pre-auction:
    Salary cap
    Player 1: INR 15 crore
    Player 2: INR 11 crore
    Player 3: INR 7 crore

    If two players are retained pre-auction:
    Salary cap
    Player 1: INR 12.5 crore
    Player 2: INR 8.5 crore

    If one player is retained pre-auction:
    Salary cap
    Player 1: INR 12.5 crore

    In the event an uncapped player is retained, only INR 3 crore will be deducted.

    So who are the likely players to be retained today?

    - Chennai Super Kings: Almost confirmed to be (1) MS Dhoni and (2) Suresh Raina. Considerable debate whether Ravindra Jadeja or Dwaye Bravo will be the third retention or whether they will be picked up using the RTM option.
    - Delhi Daredevils: Chris Morris seems to be leading pick here. Others in discussion include Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Pat Cummins
    - Kings XI Punjab: While its probably a better option to retain no one and use the INR 80 crore for new players, KXIP has apparently confirmed it will retain 1 player. Will it be Axar Patel, Hashim Amla, David Miller, Glenn Maxwell or Marcus Stoinis?
    - Kolkata Knight Riders: Reportedly not to keen on retaining captain and talisman Gautam Gambhir. Interested in (1) Sunil Narine and (2) Andre Russell. May go for Manish Pandey or Kuldeep Yadav as the third - both India T20I regulars
    - Mumbai Indians: (1) Rohit Sharma and (2) Hardik Pandya are locks. The 3rd is likely to be either Jasprit Bumrah or Krunal Pandya. The benefit of retaining Krunal is that it will only cost MI 3 crore - a likely bargain
    - Rajasthan Royals: Steve Smith is a certainity. Some doubts on Ajinkya Rahane
    - Royal Challengers Bangalore: Easiest 3 to retain - (1) Virat Kohli, (2) AB de Villiers and (3) Yuzvendra Chahal
    - Sunrisers Hyderabad: Likely to be (1) David Warner and (2) Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Talk of either Shikhar Dhawan or Deepak Hooda (uncapped) as the third

    What do you predict? Are they players above worth the retention prices? Or is it better to have an open auction and build new teams from scratch?

    Would appreciate thoughts - I know this is not Test cricket (still the greatest format in the sport), but this is the closest we will get to the NFL's Draft Day

    I'm surprised that RCB don't win this thing every year with Kohli and ABdV in the same team.

    Did some reading on wikipedia and it looks like Rising Pune SuperGiants were a team added in place of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, which is why they had players like Dhoni and Smith. The Chennai and Rajasthan teams were banned for something or other, but now they are back so I'm led to believe that Pune are no longer needed as a result and Chennai and Rajasthan have their players back. I haven't actually followed IPL closely so I can't be sure of these facts. The whole thing seems harsh on the Pune fans though.
