Didn't Hayden bat ridiculously well in the 07 World Cup? 650 odd @ 73 with a SR of 100 plus and three tons. He just looked imperious*

I remember poor old Hussey couldn't even get a hit in that tourney.

*still looked a bit of a ****, mind you

The thing is that Hayden didn't even get man of the series in that World Cup. He got beaten by Glenn McGrath. But McGrath didn't have an exceptional world cup by his standards, merely an above average one. Then again, McGrath was a World Cup specialist in ODIs.

Overall:

2007:

Interesting though, that if you take away McGrath's world cup performances against the minnows (especially the 7-15 v Namibia), I don't think he's stats are really any better than his career stats. He was just a class bowler in general.

Tendulkar was incredible in 2003, someone might be able to check this and correct me, but I think he won the Man of the Tournament by the biggest margin in any WC?

Seems weird that a few of these choices (Zulu (99), Tendulkar (03), M Waugh (96)) came in losing causes. As a comparison, in football the greatest WC performers are the ones that won the trophy for their teams - Maradona 86, Pele 58 and 70, Garrincha 62, etc.

Interesting to probably list the best performers of the winning teams of all the WCs:

WI 1975 - ??
WI - 1979 - Greenidge?
Ind - 1983 - Kapil? Amarnath?
Aus - 1987 - McDermott?
Pak - 1992 - Inzi? Imran?
SL - 1996 - De Silva? Sanath?
Aus - 1999 - Waugh bros? Warne?
Aus - 2003 - Ponting? McGrath?
Aus - 2007 - Hayden? McGrath?
Ind - 2011 - Yuvraj?
Aus - 20115 - Starc?

Given the pressure of the occasion & quality of the opposition, I thought De Silva's match winning 100 in 96 WC Final at Lahore against McGrath & Warne (that too while chasing, and he came in to bat when SL were at 23-2) was a great knock. It was also the first time that the team chasing won a World Cup final.
His innings of 66 off 44 balls in the SF against India of that same WC was astonishingly beautiful to watch (quality-wise, it was even better than his 100 in the Final).

In the entire 1996 World Cup, De Silva scored 448 runs at an average of around 90, and a strike rate of nearly 110. Back then, they were astonishing numbers. As the best batsman of his side, it was great to watch him perform when his side needed him the most.

Had Viv Richards not played that over confident pull shot off Madan Lal in 1983 WC Final, he would have had a grand World Cup. His innings against Pak in the SF (while chasing) was great knock. I am certain had Viv become out early in that match, rest of the batsmen (no matter how great the names were) would have made heavy weather of it. Viv just had the ability to make difficult, high-pressure situations look so ridiculously easy.

I like your prediction and I know he looks fit but I can't see Starc remaining a force in international cricket that long

Surprised with so few mentions for Starc. Maybe it's because it's too recent in everyone's minds to put up there? Imo, he had the best WC any bowler has ever had. And by a distance.

DeSilva in 96 quite underrated. Jayasuriya got MoS but really, it was De Silva who was the stand out performer for SL. Especially his ice cool batting in semi and final was incredible.

Martin Crowe in a losing cause in 92 as well
Yup, ftr In '92 Crowe scored 456 runs at an average of 114 and a SR of 90, with 1 hundred and 4 fifties. If you adjusted that SR to today's standards, it'd probably be around 110.
