Went back to one from Matt Quinn, inside edge on to his stumps, stunning start to the season

looks like it will be quite low and slow, not a lot for the bowlers. Loose shots have cost wickets in the 1st session

If KW is out then I would move Taylor up to 3 and bring Brownlie back at 4. Ross may not like it, but I reckon he could be convinced if everyone agreed that it was only a temporary measure until Kane is back. That would also give Brownlie a deserved chance to prove he should be picked ahead of Anderson.

In reality, I think it's more likely that BMc will move up to number 3 instead. He's been batting in the same spot in the order for two tests in a row afterall.

I'd think about just slotting Brownlie straight in at three. I think he's less far away from being able to handle the new ball than he is at being able to start against spin, and I think he's starting to find out that being a specialist at playing quicks with the old ball will find you out of the side a lot at Test level. Remodelling himself as a top order player could be a good career move.

More seriously, I think dropping Sodhi for anyone other than Vettori would be poor form. If they're going to pick on potential, then they need to stick to their guns and not create an in-out situation. You don't really learn much anyway from one game in isolation because we don't know where the previous test sits relative to Sodhi's average performance. They pretty much have to give him the Windies series now, and that's why I didn't want him picked in the first place.

OK. Quiz question about ND debutants, in two parts:

1. What's the last occasion that two ND batsman made their first class debut in the same game? (I don't know the answer yet, will need to do some digging).

2. Which one of the two debutants will be the next Kane? (Replies to be buried in a time capsule, and opened in 5 years time)

Edit: by "the next Kane" I mean dominate at first class level, before becoming having a good test career.

If KW isn't back for the WI series, a straight swap for Flynn, Brownlie, Ryder or Latham. Brownlie is probably most likely to get the gig and Flynn the least likely.

Presuming Vettori is still unavailable, it pretty much guarantees both Sodhi and Anderson's selection because noone else can even bowl part time. Unless they pick Ryder but even then I don't think they'll want to risk an injury by bowling him so quickly after recall.

Of course, Patel should be ahead of Sodhi at home, much like the decision to go with Bartin over Astle for the England series because the conditions demanded that the spinner be someone to keep it tight and allow the seamers to attack, rather than being a genuine wicket taking proposition. But I don't know if the selectors will see it that way.

Kugglejuggle is such a raw cricketer. I wouldn't be surprised if he makes himself into an awesome international allrounder in ten years time but atm he's so far away from being that guy it's crazy.

Newcomer Joe Carter was the standout batsman for the Knights in the first session, looking assured in his first-class debut before a rare loose shot saw him fall for 48.

New Knights captain Daniel Flynn had the worst start possible to the new season, falling first ball after the visitors won the toss and sent the hosts in on a day when afternoon rain was forecast.

Flynn went back and across to the opening delivery from Aces seamer Matt Quinn and then had the mortification to see an inside edge castle his stumps.

That brought 20-year-old debutant Carter to the crease in testing circumstances. The right-hander took a compact, patient approach and finally got off the mark 17 balls into his innings by angling Dean Bartlett between gully and backward point down to the short off-side boundary.

Donovan Grobbelaar had immediate success on his first-class debut, with the left-arm seamer trapping Knights opener Brad Wilson lbw for 5 in his opening over when replacing Quinn.

At 18-2, the Knights found a solid partnership between Carter and Daryl Mitchell, but both fell shortly before lunch to again give the Aces the upper hand.

Carter perished to a rare loose shot off Colin de Grandhomme's bowling and Mitchell (30) followed soon after with a mistimed pull off Quinn.

Former Black Caps skipper Daniel Vettori, playing his first first-class match in 15 months after twice requiring surgery on an injured Achilles tendon, made a brisk 36 off 37 deliveries (five fours and a six). He and Watling put on 69 for the fifth wicket.

Yeah I agree with this. Jeets should only be considered on the vanishingly rare occasions when picking 2 spinners is justified by the surface (and obviously only if Vettori is unavailable). Sodhi has been selected as a long term project, and it would be poor management to ditch him so quickly for a guy who's already had 5 or 6 chances to solidify his place in the team.

I think the point kinda was the fact Butler was ****ed, thus reducing their attack on a flat deck to a guy in his second first-class match, two medium pacers at best and an offie. Hardly think it is a copout to bat on when you have lost your main strike bowler.
