If Vettori makes runs in his FC return, would anyone consider batting him at 6/7 in the tests and pursuing 4 seamers? Personally, given how shakey our top order is going to be without Kane, I'd probably want to see evidence that he was back to his old form. That would mean several additional FC appearances as well as some runs in LO cricket (which is hard, as Vettori was never an especially good LO batsman).

Immenso's request to see a bit of swing back into left-handers from Henry.

Hamish Rutherford batting like a lunatic really has nothing to with Henry's swing. The filter seems to spit out 'videos you may also be interested in' sometimes.

He won't need to bat 6/7 if one of the 4 seamers is Anderson.

Southee
Boult
Wagner Milne
Vettori
Anderson

Sounds ***y

Yeah I think Vettori works really well with having a fast bowling allrounder somewhere between six and eight. It's why I was always so hopeful of Franklin remembering that he was actually a bowler before his injury; it would have balanced the side really well. Allrounders tend to work better in pairs, especially if they aren't truly Test class on the strength of either of their specialist skills.

My only gripe with Hendrix' suggested line up is the ten million lefties. We would have to make damn sure the pitches don't turn. Dan doesn't use turn anyway so we lose nothing.

You don't think Vettori was test class with bat or ball alone? itstl.
Oh, I just don't think he is now. He was with the ball for a little while earlier in his career and with the bat for a while a few years ago.

Keep in mind there's definitely a difference between "the best available for New Zealand" and "genuinely Test class" too.

Flem, you said above that the NZ goal should be to win the next Test, but then said Sodhi shouldn't have played. But which other spinner, given Bartin's dramatic failure in the first Test, should have played in his place to try and win the Test? I mean, you gain nothing by playing 4 quicks + Anderson + KW in Bangladesh (5 quicks seems like overkill, and Kane isn't a sole spinner on the subcontinent), so realistically the XI had to include a specialist spinner.

Who would you have played, with Vettori injured and Bartin proving himself incapable. Jeets? Tastle? Give Bartin another crack?

Phlegm has been pretty adamant on the four quicks + Kane thing.

Williamson will be an enormous loss if he misses any of the tests vs the West Indies. I had this penned in as his 'I have arrived' golden summer and it's going to be difficult if he's coming back cold from injury. We don't have a ready-made number 3 replacement either - will we push Brownlie or Taylor up to bat there, or bring in Latham? I'm not considering Ryder at this stage and wouldn't want to see him bat at 3 anyway.

Secondly, without his part-time spin there's no way we'll opt for the four pace bowler attack. Vettori would be ideal if proven fit but I very much doubt that will happen. So we're back to the Sodhi experiment or Martin, with no room for Milne.

Four quicks and KW. The quicks did a good job all series even without Southee and KW is as good as most Shield spinners. It's not ideal but you have to field as many test class bowlers as possible or failing that, someone with a bit of a golden arm or who can keep the runs down.

Yeah, but with Anderson around now, its more like 5 quicks and KW. That's my only concern - kinda why nobody seriously suggests Australia don't pick a spinner and use Smith to bowl more overs while Watson's in the side. Unless you really think that fifth seamer (probably Bracewell or Milne) adds more to the attack in SC conditions than a spinner does.

FTR my NZ First XI would be along the lines of:

Fulton
Rutherford
Williamson [6]
Taylor
McCullum *
Watling +
Anderson [4]
Vettori [5]
Wagner [3]
Southee [1]
Boult [2]

Ryder, Sodhi, Milne, Bracewell my squad players + a floating batsman picked on form.

TBH I'd drop McCullum for Ryder in a heartbeat.

He just wouldn't bowl Anderson much and wouldn't pick him if he didn't think he justified his spot on batting alone.

He's essentially saying that he thinks this attack:
Boult, Bracewell, Wagner, Milne and Williamson
would've been better than this one:
Boult, Bracewell, Wagner, Anderson, Sodhi and Williamson

If KW is out then I would move Taylor up to 3 and bring Brownlie back at 4. Ross may not like it, but I reckon he could be convinced if everyone agreed that it was only a temporary measure until Kane is back. That would also give Brownlie a deserved chance to prove he should be picked ahead of Anderson.

In reality, I think it's more likely that BMc will move up to number 3 instead. He's been batting in the same spot in the order for two tests in a row afterall.

Wonder if Ellis might come in to that SL squad as captain.
"Volts coach Vaughn Johnson said it was a team decision to bat on rather than set a more attainable target."

Urghhh. Management by committee. It doesn't work. De Boorder's the captain, he should be making the calls on the declaration - a team decision is a cop out.

Management by committee doesn't work in the long run.

PEWS making all my posts for me today. If Anderson wasn't up to it with the bat, then unless he was one of our best three quicks with the ball I'd go with six bats, BJ at seven and then the four quicks. Though come to think of it with KW batting three and quicks needing more rest, five bowlers could still be a legit strategy.

And I agree with your first XI Dan.
