I admire ****s like Smith who know their game inside and out and troll the opposition bowlers into bowling to their strengths in the mistaken belief they can get them out like that.

I mean think about it. Smith doesn't have a cover drive, but is awesome on the leg side. Bowlers still bowl on his pads and try and get him out like that. Bizarro world.

What is the origin and real purpose of the rule which says you can't be out lbw if you are hit outside the line of off stump and are playing a shot? Is it just a batsman-protection rule?

I understand the outside leg stump rule, as that can lead to very negative bowling.

But if you miss with the bat and get hit on the pad, and the ball would have hit the stumps - why shouldn't you be out?
