but if the ashes isnt a trophy then y is the crystal trophy in the shape fo the ashes and y did vaughan hold up a replica at the end of the 05 series

I think jerry springer is the only man who can settle this...him or steve. i voted yes but ive come around to a different way of thinmking...the urn itslef is owned by the mcc. the crystal thing won is what is won by both teams, then displayed in the trophy cabinet.

The mcc owns the ashes.
we have won "the ashes series" not the ashes urn. The urn itself is like a historical timepiece, you wouldn't go moving stonhenge to another country if a series played was called "stonehenge or something" (yes i realise how stupid that last bit sounds...couldnt find a better way to make my point.)
stumped my firend, that article is fresh from the daily telegraph........bit of advice, if your ever doing a school/uni assignment, DONT use commercial newspapers.

If the Ashes (as owned by the MCC) were the actual trophy, then why was there a crystal trophy and a replica handed over?

Last time I checked, no other major trophy in other sports that was handed to the winning team was a crystal copy...

because the crystal one IS intended to be the trohpy ....both the replica and the trophys are replicas of the urn is because when you win the series it feels like you won the ashes/urn....so its just there to support the feeling but you dont really win it but it feels like it so there

actually no they aren't you're being snobby....1st of what happens if they trophy gets destroyed...if you going to change the tradition and make a new you then you would have to give the urn back to england when they win and it would be travel back and forth when there's a new winner and eventually be destroyed like the 1st trophy for the fifa world cup...notice both the icc and fifa doesnt give the real trophy they give a replica! and plus even if it was to stay with the winners it wouldnt be acutally given to the players to take pictures with or hold it after they win so it would still be the feeling not the actual thing!

acutal, im pretty sure it would just stay in australia coz england suck to much to actual win it, the only reason the MCC want it in england coz they'd get it no other way

uh they just won it last year and could win it again your just pointlessly continueing the thread...stumped you went down the track for a six but you been stumped sorry...you cant be ignorant and say australia is going win every series from this reality check- no they aren't so then the urn would have to be moved around for this new tradition which would have the possibility of having it destroyed which we cant take the risk for and therefore this discussion is over and so is this thread......

The 'idea' of the Ashes -ie, the urn with the burnt bails- and the starting point of the legend were done by Englishmen and on English soil. For that reason alone, the urn should stay in England, even if England doesnt win the ashes for the next one hundred years.

What's the point of getting the urn if you can't even touch it? Pointless IMO. Th ecrystal trophy and replica urns should be enough. In that Mcgrath profile they id in hi slast Test he seemed happy enough with the replica!

Apparantly Gideon Haigh tore Richard Branson a new one at the Border/Botham/Branson press conference. Nice too see, populist tool.

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned the Ashes are staying in Australia. It wasn't until 1927 when Ivo Bligh died that people were actually aware there was a physical manifestation of the Ashes & the series seemed to get along quite nicely before without a "trophy" as such. It's the idea that is The Ashes, not the tiny, fragile urn.

IMO we should get to keep Richard Hadlee every time we beat the Kiwis in the Chappell-Hadlee ODI series. In a metal cage suspended over Bay 13 at the MCG.

(They can have Trev Chappell should we ever happen to lose.)
