Ponting to break all batting Records

Yeah Karachi test will be the final test of the year for Pakistan. He needs 149 runs to break Viv's record and if he scores another century he will also be the first batsman ever to record 8 centuries in a calendar year. Viv had 7 in 1976.
Well Ponting can break that record, he already has 6 centuries from 7 Tests during 2006 and there's still 3 tests to play this year :)

And with the centuries, its not like he equalled Waugh by playing heaps and heaps of tests - he's played something like 64 fewer innings than Waugh. He's only a couple behind Tendulkar and Lara, and will, by the end of the Ashes, have drawn level with them IMO, and he's been played stacks less matches than those two as well.

Yeah, it's amazing if you look at the top 5 century makers for Australia in tests, they showed it on TV the other day. Really shows you how prolific Ponting and Hayden have been.

Waugh - 32 from 260 innings
Ponting - 32 from 176 innings
Bradman - 29 from 80 innings
Border - 27 from 265 innings
Hayden - 26 from 151 innings

Ponting's also scored 22 since the tour of Pakistan in late '02. 4 centuries late in 2002, 6 each in 2003, 2005 and 2006. That's 22 centuries in 50 tests. Not quite as good as Bradman's 29 in 52, but pretty good anyway.

It might have already been said, but everyone is assuming that he will carry on this amazing run of form he's in, for another 4 years or so, which is pretty ridiculous to be honest. It has to end somewhere (I'd like to think so anyway), and that might be later rather than sooner.

No, if people were saying he'd finish his career averaging 65, they'd be assuming his run of form would continue forever. Even if Ponting averaged 40 with one or two centuries every year for the rest of his career and played for say 5 years, he'd still finish his career with the record for centuries and probably for runs as well.

To put his current age in context, look at Steve Waugh. He's a guy who began his career pretty young like Ponting, and developed from being a solid batsman to a great one as his career went on. Ponting turns 32 during this Ashes series, and has currently played 106 tests. Waugh, at his 32nd birthday in June 1997, had played 91, and he retired in January 2004. Waugh finished up playing 168. At 32, he'd scored 5615 runs @ 49.69, and finished up with 10927 @ 51.06. Waugh declined pretty badly in his mid 30s and his average dropped from 52 or so down to 49, before he got it back up again with a run of good form before he retired. Between turning 32 and retiring, Waugh scored 18 of his 32 centuries. Ponting already has 9,000 runs and 32 centuries.

Now, Ponting may very well fall a long way short of that, but the point is merely that there's no reason to assume that he doesn't have plenty of cricket left in him. Some guys like Tendulkar struggle from their early 30s on, while others like Lara and Waugh find the best periods of their career come in their early to mid 30s. It could really go either way, but whether Ponting declines sharply within the next couple of years or repeats his last 4 seasons over the next 4 years, he's still a good chance to break a number of records.

how about ponting breaking gilchrist's record of most sixers? dont know how far behind he is though! he might break the record for most boundaries, which must belong to lara now! dont know that for sure.

Be interesting to see how many runs he ends up with at the end of his career. Given he seems likely to be most of the way to 10,000 by the end of the Ashes!! :) He could well be the first person to get 15,000 runs.

There's 4 current players ahead of him in that list, and I would suggest it'd be very hard for him to finish at the top of the list - since he's only two thirds of Gilchrists numbers so far...

Heck, he's only actually got a handful more than Jacques Kallis!

As good as Ponting is, he doesn't hit a lot of sixes in his innings. I can't remember him hitting one in his 196.

As my first post was to list the records that I thought Ponting couldn't break, here are a few that I think he will:

(1) Leading Test Run Scorer - He's currently 7th
(2) 2nd highest Test Batting average - he's currently 6th
(3) Most Test Centuries - He's currently 4th
(4) Most occasions of centuries in both innings - (he currently has 3 which is tied for 1st with Gavaskar)
Don't think he will beat the 2nd highest batting average. Would be really tough for him.
