Best bowling attack you can think of

SF Barnes
Bill O'Reilly
Dennis Lillee
Curtly Ambrose
George Lohmann

I have only watched two of these bowlers live, despite the rumours:p

I'm going to assume thats because you've been in a coma for the last 80 odd years. :p

TBH I wouldn't be too perturbed about playing two "similar" bowlers like McGrath and Hadlee in the same team. If anything, it makes their unerring accuracy harder to face knowing that you won't get anything from the other end either.

So when would you take Harmison and when would you take VRV?
Good question I am glad you asked!

VRV Singh if its flat bouncy track, mainly because VRV can extract more bounce and pace than Harmison. Also, VRV has a much better built and is much taller, therefore can get that extra bounce while Harmison's petite figure makes him struggle.

Harmison, if and only IF, the team is playing against a minnow. Just to give VRV a rest, we can't afford to waste him for such meaningless games.

Thats one long tail, but I don't think you can bench any of those if you have them in the side. It would be rare occasion indeed if the opposition can make more than 450 in the first innings on a perfect batting pitch, and I doubt any side can chase more than 200 in the fourth innings....ever.
dont u think that the swing and reverse swing at pace of Akram (added to his variety as a left armer) would bring a better dimension? I would put him there instead of either McGrath or Ambrose.

1) Wilfred Rhodes, the greatest bowler of all time in my opinion.

2) Richard Hadlee, the greatest pace bowler of all time in my opinion.

3) Muttiah Muralitharan, the best bowler at this present time, and should be considered a great.

4) Glenn McGrath, one of the best pace bowlers for a good 60 years, in my opinion.

5) Dave Mohammed, pretty obvious really,

It is tempting to replace someone for Wasim. If I do Wasim for McGrath, then I can have an attack consisting of bowlers who can all go 90mph, but then I lose my most consistent bowler.

Wasim for Ambrose would mean I would lose my most explosive bowler, and Wasim for Marshall would mean I would lose probably the most complete bowler ever. So if I am going to include Wasim, it would have to be in place of one of the spinners, maybe Warne.

So its a tough choice IMO, but I think I will stick to my team.

These bowlers are only from recent times because I haven't seen or heard of most bowlers pre 1980 and can't make an accurate judgement on them.

is best attack i can think of in the last 20 odd years. yes, akram might add more variety or ambrose can replace mcgrath. but i'll stick to my team.

if i am allowed to include players i haven't seen then i would go for

marshall
hadlee
barnes
oreilly
murali

as the third pacer, barnes would be bettter than mcgrath. limited footage i have seen of o'reilly made me fall in love with his style. his stats are also better than warney's. i am going for them both.

Malcolm Marshall (best seamer ever IMO)
Allan Donald (best of the strongest seam-bowling period in history [the 1990s] IMO)
Imran Khan (best seamer in subcontinental conditions ever IMO)
Richard Hadlee (best action ever probably, as good a reason as any to select him ahead of any number of other perfectly well-qualified candidates, such as Ambrose and McGrath)
SF Barnes (very possibly the greatest bowler ever - fast Leg-Breaks, and accurate ones too, and the odd seamer for variation)

Specialist spinners, you say? Who needs 'em!

This is on the pretence that it's an attack I want bowling together for 10 years. If it's just a one-off game, the Waqar Younis of 1990-1994 gets in ahead of Donald, Imran and Hadlee.

I simply cannot believe that in a few days this thread will be 11 months old! :-O

Amazed it didn't get more replies too TBH. Quiet at the tail-end of 2006 was it?
