funny how no one has been talking about how bad his bowling form has been aswell(he's certainly not played as a specialist batsman)

Symonds in his last 7 ODI's

20 runs@3.33, H/S:20, Ducks:5
2 wickets@73.33, RPO:4.89

How exactly is he not played as a specialist batsman? Since the start of 2003, including his recent poor run of form, his record is 1557 runs @ 43.25. That's more than adequate for a specialist batsman. His bowling is simply an added bonus, and is quite handy in ODIs.

hmmm yes i agree with you - i must of just always assumed he was an allrounder since that's how he started, i just made quite an interesting observation - during the time in which his batting improved greatly his bowling seemed to delcline to quite an effect

Symonds before 2003
750 runs@25.86, 2 fifties
43 wickets@30.98, RPO:4.91,

Symonds after 2003
1557 runs@43,25, 2 hundreds 9 fifties
25 wickets@62.56, RPO:4.86

In all honesty, do people expect much from him with the ball?

Bring some new youngsters in to the team.Soon mcgrath and shane warne will retire The team need youngsters who can atleast last till the world cup.there are so many good players in australia that are playing domestic cricket.Five ducks is really bad for a international player And not be forget that he is also playing for australia a much better team. How long would he last?

The only time i say him making a massive score was againts pakistan in the world cup whom he saved australia form losing. After that he has been performing like he dont know how to play cricket. It is really sad to see a player who plays for australia and seeing him go ducks consective times. He is playing with best players like ricky pointing damien matin etc.Bring a new player in the team.like husely who is playing domestic cricket and playing for victoria.

Symonds is a quality player. I wouldnt doubt his ability to shine when given a reprieve - he showed at the world cup that big occasions suit his game - so this move by the selectors does make sense considering that - and given just how huge the difference in quality between Aus and Pak/WI.

Australia's selectors obviously have not forgotten him at a time when The Next Generation is recieving a call up - as Shane Watson found out. Form might wane but quality endures. That said, Australia's selectors have it so good with whats available to them that they could almost pull names out of the first class hat and still come out smelling like roses.

symonds's bowling E/R in one dayers is 4.89 - i don't think that is all too bad, there are certainly a lot worse going around, and those are just the specialists. If he didn't have to bowl so much spin he probably would have a better average.

BTW it's worth noting here that Symonds today scored more runs than the rest of the top 5 combined. If he'd have stayed in for one or two more overs I think he'd have killed them.

Oh, and Symonds has made 0,0,0,20,0,0,31 which is hardly '5 ducks in a row' so the original poster deserves an uppercut.

Maybe just a light slap, 'cause those figures are still extremely bad. On the other hand, maybe you're right and an uppercut is needed, 'cause Chappell's record was FOUR ducks, and they were in tests, not ODIs.

Not sure how much today's innings helped him, but there's no doubt Symonds' spot is in some peril.

i think his spot is assured after today. As I said, he made more runs than hayden, clarke, ponting, lehmann put together. And, his confidence was improving with each run. I thought he looked pretty good actually, the dismissal was quite soft though.

I think he was actually dropped from the Bushrangers team... Hussey, that is!

Symonds is a gun! I dont think he needs to be dropped at all, just give him a few more matches. Today looked promising :)

To be fair, there was a Cricinfo article which compared it to Chappell's record.

probably because he is a useless bowler, and no one really expected him to do much better?
