3rd Test at Headingley, Leeds

So everyone bar Langer agrees Siddle shouldn't play. Pattinson simply has to return. Starc to miss out again.
That Burns wicket might be Siddles last. 219 (test wickets) is a pretty Aussie number. I remember when Taylor and Slater both had 219 as their highest test scores.

You never know though, but I do agree its a little silly to not bring back Patto back if he is 100% fit.

Pointless speculating, safe to assume Australia will give Smith until the last possible minute to re-test him before the third test.

Should Smith be allowed to play?

Of course he wants to, any player worth his salt would, but from a duty of care standpoint?

CA's concussion guidelines seem uniquely lax, in having no mandatory standdown.

Cards on table, I don't want him to play, being English and that, but players' health must transcend parochial rivalry or short term expediency, surely?

He really shouldn't be allowed to play. Concussion is minimum a week recovery.

Not a doctor though etc etc

The decision on whether or not he’s allowed to play should be made by a concussion specialist independent of Cricket Australia.

Why? Do you think Australian doctors will send a sick man out to a possible death because it might increase their chances of winning the series?

Like everyone I'm still spooked by the Hughes incident and, reluctantly, think Smith should be spelled for this test. Bancroft out Harris in Marnus at 4. Its a terrible batting side and I expect us to lose. Hopefully Smith can come back for the last two matches, rested, composed and with a plan. Except for the slight problem of not scoring the required runs Marnus doesn't look bad. He seems to have a pretty good technique and certainly has ambition and a pair of stones. Anyway he got us a draw at Lords and must come in whether Smith plays or not.

I'm always thrown out by you being British since you have brumby in your name

In other sports he'd already be ruled out. I guess cricket rules are different. Not sure I'd want Root playing if it was him who was hit despite the importance of the test to the series result.

Cricket seems slightly behind the likes of the NFL in terms of concussion management.
