Bats largely did their job, maybe 10 short but bowling just destroyed by Gayle. It can happen, can't really get to down on them.
Its happened in the last 2 games though. Bowlers got absolutely mauled by abdv and amla at wanderers and now against gayle here.

Only 10 short is being nice to the batsman, that was a 200 wicket not a 180 one and considering englands attack they probably needed 210.

I think 230 would have been competitive on the pitch - not just for WI but for any team because of the boundaries being short and outline being fast - plus the dampness of the outfield. WI could have gotten 280 in 16 overs.

44 percent of WI innings was dot balls - they were never pressured even while losing wickets.

Yet another phenomenal innings from by far the best T20 batsman ever. Anyone who doubts this has rocks in their head.

Gayle has 17 T20 hundreds.

The next closest is McCullum with 7.

17.

He averages 43 with a SR of 150.

From 30 innings or more, he has the highest average of ANY T20 batsman and the 18th highest SR of any batsman (keeping in mind he averages more than double the majority of those blokes).

He is also consistently playing in the most difficult T20 leagues in the world.

8826 @ 43.69 SR 150.15 Gayle is so far ahead of any other T20 player it's ridiculous. He is indisputably the greatest T20 player in its relatively short history and by a large enough margin that he might just be the greatest for a long time to come.

You just can't have two openers getting starts and finishing with 43 off 41 balls. 43-2 off 6.5 overs is poor on a flat pitch. The opening batsmen are massively important and need to be capable of playing big innings. Hales is, Roy just seems a russian roulette batsman and not a very good one.

Moeen or Root need to open.
There is no reasonable explanation for Morgan coming in at 5 and Stokes at 6. Having batting that goes down to 10 is a pointless attribute in this format.

I agree with you that Root should open, probably in place of Roy who is overrated in virtually every format. I would also recommend shifting everyone a place up and selecting an extra bowler, preferably Liam Dawson as I genuinely believe that the value of extra bowling options is significantly underestimated (plus our bowling is ****e).

I would argue that no one has doubted this for at least half a decade. Few players have the ability to build an innings like he does in t20.

Some more Gayle stats

Gayle has 626 6s, the next highest are Pollard 388, McCullum 290, Dwayne Smith 275 and Warner 256.

Gayle averages 2.66 maximums an innings
Pollard 1.45
McCullum 1.34
Warner 1.29
Smith 1.16

Gayle also has 12 ducks... but has the most consecutive innings without a duck as well. 145 innings from 10 Feb 2012 to 5 Feb 2016. (The next most is 89 for Malik, Boucher was at 76*)

He is one of only 4 men to carry their bat through a completed innings when he made 63* in the world T20 semi final vs. Sri Lanka in 2009. Murali, Malinga Mendis and Matthews scythed through the rest of the West Indian team, with Ramdin next highest scorer with 9 runs. With 62.37% of his teams runs, this innings was 47th on highest % of runs for your teams total score. Not all that impressive? Gayle has 4 better efforts, and all of them are for different teams.

He also holds the conventionally seen records of highest score (175*) and most runs (8826) but those are boring.

Forget all these stats. The reason that Gayle is the greatest T20 batsman because no one else can score a century, while appearing half asleep at the same time.

I missed it all due to Cheltenham. Think I got the better end of the bargain by sound of it.

Actually forgot it was on at all. Ooops.

10 short puts their score at 196. Bizarre comment.

I'm actually quite intrigued by Flintoff's suggestion of Stokes to open. It shouldn't work but if he gets in then it would be destructive. If he fails then it's no worse than Roy.
