Your Cricket Season

I'm ****ing hating the beginning of the season; really being worn down by Treasurer duties over the past couple of years at the club.

Have bowled the house down on a couple of occasions at training, other times more so-so. Haven't really bothered batting - had a good year with the stick last year, being a little more boring and playing straight. I leave all the ball machine and throw down work to the young guys/proper batsmen, I know what I need to do to get ready.
Easy for me to say, I know, but I'd really try to ditch the Treasury role if you're starting to dislike it. I got stuck doing something similar for a local skittles league long after my willingness to do it had gone and it ended up killing any interest I had in that particular past-time. Might just be me being particularly weak, and of course a love for cricket ought to be impossible to extinguish.

Either way, good luck in the upcoming season :)

Btw, my apologies if that came off as patronising/me thinking I know what's best for you etc. It certainly wasn't meant to, but I'm not always the greatest when it comes to communication.

New season kicking off in HK soon. I will be umpiring a few games across the different divisions I hope, and I'm also a member of two different teams in different leagues so hoping for a decent amount of gametime. Started with 1-29 in 6 overs in a pre-season friendly this Sunday, which was a solid effort given we conceded 217 in 35 overs on a tiny ground. Sadly followed that up with a 2-ball duck slogging as last man in with 32 needed in 17 balls. Oh well.

Well, after our earlier fixtures were rained off (not that it rains in England, of course), we finally got underway with the biggest match of the season - the inter-office match. Was a lovely evening. I didn't get dismissed, which was a plus. I also bowled some filth, which was less of a positive, but hardly unexpected. We won and unearthed some new talent, so all good.

Played again this today, another lovely evening for it. Unfortunately, we lost quite heavily, as about 3/4 of the way through our chase, the runs just suddenly dried up. I didn't get to bat in the end, but I did keep wicket for the first time, which, surprisingly, actually went pretty well.

My season ended recently. Was my first full season playing Saturday cricket in HK. It's a lot tougher than I expected. The standard is pretty high. Personally I was pleased that I went from essentially a specialist fielder to being able to play a key role in one victory and to become a useful middle/end overs spinner for the side. I also only got dismissed for the first time in my final innings, trying to slog the second last ball. Batting average of 30 with a HS of 17, I'll take that

Looking forward to the coming seasons. There are lots of things I could have done better. My bowling has come along loads this season, and I feel I can definitely get a lot more accurate and get better at transferring my energy though the ball. Fielding was good but I should really get more practice in so i can lift it up to the next level. Batting has the most room for improvement - I need to play more friendly/social games where I'd get more time in the middle so that I can start working on transferring what I'm trying in the nets to the middle. I don't get much opportunity batting at 11, but if I can start scoring runs in non-league games I can maybe get a promotion up the order.

season is going well. played seven games now but strangely am in the team as a bowler rather than a batsman. Have currently picked up 14 wickets and an economy rate of 3.23 which is more wickets and a better rate than our opening bowler who actually picked up the league bowling trophy last year! Not bad for an old duffer like me. More importantly we are doing well as a team after being promoted to the next division up last year. We are currently 4/17 but there is a fair way to go. My aim as VC for the team was to survive in this division this year but the team have more in mind!

Bagged my first duck today, amazing it hadn't already happened, really. Also hurt my shoulder quite badly, hopefully nothing serious. Anyway, more importantly it was yet another lovely evening (that's three now - and to think we all doubted Howe's summation of English weather) and we won :)

Interesting match tonight. We'd failed to capitalise on a very impressive start and though we certainly didn't bowl badly, we were still looking at a pretty heavy defeat when they needed 3 of the last 3 overs. Fifteen consecutive dot balls later (including a bowled, then a caught and then a run-out off the last 3 of these) we were feeling somewhat less down and out, but then they went and hit a six. Was such a fun game.

Bump

So a while ago I sat down to produce an excel file to tally up my total stats across various seasons, leagues, teams and friendly games I have played over the last 7-8 years (didn't play any proper hardball cricket before that).

Today I added in all my games from this season so far, and also found an archive of scorecards for the first team I played for back in 2010/11, so I spent a couple of hours updating all of it.

It turns out I now have 43 games under my belt - probably a few more because I definitely remember some games that I have not been able to find scorecards for (and can't recall my stats).

The pleasing news is a career bowling average of 23.44 thus far. Not bad for a garbage offspinner. The disappointing news is a batting average of 9.

The saddest statistic I've come up with though is that I spend around 5-7 hours of my life for each game (including transportation, warmup, hanging around after each match), but I only bowl 17 balls and bat for 9 on average every game.

5 hours for 26 deliveries on average. ****ing hell.

Actually if you think about it, it makes sense

I play 35 over cricket, which means there are a maximum of 210 batting and 210 bowling deliveries available across all 11 players. That works out to about 38 deliveries per person.

But then factor in that not every game lasts all 70 overs anyways, and that I've played a lot of 30 over games too, and about 26 deliveries per game actually seems right.

Have you also factored in the hours spent tallying stats?

You need to go and win a trophy for something. Then you don't need stats - the gold coloured plastic says it all.

We do but not all my games are on that site. I've added in unofficial friendlies and games in competitions outside of what CHK tracks.
