Here is the complete list of touring bowlers who have taken more than 10 wickets in Australia in the last decade. It's just a really hard place to return consistently excellent figures in if you don't play here all the time (as is the case with India, and sometimes the case with England). Dale Steyn, who IMO has been the clear standout touring bowler in Australia during the last 10-15 years, averages 29.

Wow Herath has a 5fer in Australia. What a legend

Whatever it takes!!!
Man Ishant has been a disappointment. Even Ashwin has done better than him in conditions that theoretically should suit Ishant's bowling the best.

The problem touring bowlers have is that they all bowl too short. They get carried away with the bounce and get pulled all day long.

I think some fast bowlers have that problem. Shoaib certainly did in 99, when he got carried away with bowling short at 100 mph.

When he came back in 2004, hardly bowled a short ball and ended up with 2 x 5fers.

Steyn certainly didn't have that problem in 2008 or 2012. Wasim was brilliant on his first tour in 1990.

I really miss Shoaib. You just don't get bowlers like that anymore.

I feel that this thread needs some revival and discussion now that the ashes is over (sorry Adders).

Nah he's too old, we're all about youth. Maybe if we go to England he'd get picked, but probably not in consideration otherwise.

This series enhanced my view of Anderson if anything but I think he was outbowled by the Aussie quicks.

Surely if anything his case is strengthened by this series? He's been an excellent control bowler in this series who hasn't been able to attack because he's lacked support. That wouldn't be a problem if he were picked in a strong attack, and an English conditions specialist would be obviously extremely useful.

Yep.

Australia (and most other teams) lack a bowler with his skillset. And he's more adaptable than most people would have you believe, as he's proven in this series.

Right now, only SA are in a position to turn him down because they have Philander to do the job that he does. If Steyn's fit, they definitely wouldn't need him.

If you've actually watched the series and not just gone by Cricinfo statguru filtered "In Australia" then you should know that bowling is also about creating and sustaining pressure, You force batsmen to get out when you keep the under sustained pressure for long periods of time. Not one of the Aussie pacers 'blew' England away as they had boasted. Because they might boast one thing for the Aussie media but they are smart enough to realize it's just bluster and they bowled as a unit to always keep England under pressure. It was the same in 2013/14 when Siddle, Harris and Lyon were always on top of England. This is what Test bowling is.

Anderson was only able to do that when Broad was bowling at the other end and that too in some games. For most part, there was no pressure on Australia and they knew that once they see of Anderson, there's really no threat. It's kinda hard to pick up a lot of wickets when you're bowling to set batsmen batting at 70 odd or 100 odd for half the day.

Also, the guy's body seems to be made of tungsten and reinforced carbon fiber, which is a handy asset to have in a quick bowler

It's hard to say when the results they delivered are all so close, but I give Anderson lots of bonus marks for having no support whatsoever whilst carrying the attack and bowling well almost every single time he was given the ball. He also didn't get to bowl at England.

Honestly think you couldn't argue with any permutation when ranking the 4 of them.

Anderson should make Australia’s full strength side because he’s durable and poses at best a threat with the new ball and at worst a solid third seamer option when nothing is happening.

But he wouldn’t make the side because the selectors are obsessed with raw pace and youth.

For whatever reason Cricinfo now doesn't work on my phone, but a look at this decade's fast bowling figures sorted by economy rates might surprise a lot of people.
