Gilchrist by a long way, mainly because of his batting which can be phenominal. As Rik said, he's been the best wicketkeeper/batsman package for a very long time.

There's a lad in my year who looks just like him....weird:alien8:

Gilchrist is by far the best wicketkeeper batsman right now and by the time he finishes his career, could be the best of all time.

who actually voted for Ridley Jacobs??? :O
Jacobs is an extremely good keeper and a fighting batsman who have come up with brilliantly determined knocks against the toughest of opposition i.e. SA and Australia. He should be given credit. He is certainly one of the best keepers in the world.

Well he must have got better, as when he was in England in 2000 everyone called him "'ol Irongloves"

Which WI player actually had a "good" series? Remind me.

(I mean aside from Walsh....'cause he's WALSH!)

Yeah good point, but his keeping wasn't that impressive. Nagamootoo had a decent debut in both forms as well as a ton in a tour game...shame he's not gone on...

IMO, Parore was the best keeper in the world before he retired, but not the best batsman/keeper.
That would definately go to Gilchrist.

This is a pretty stupid poll as Adam Gilchrist is SO far ahead of keeper/batsmen in the world now its not funny.

A better poll would be to say of all time and include the likes of Alan Knott, Jeff Dujon, Ian Healy, Rod Marsh, Don Tallon, Wally Grout, Bert Oldfield, etc,.

or how about the second best wicket keeper/batsman...I think Alec Stewart. Andy Flower is an awesome batsman but Alec is overall better.

stewart is the worst keeper at international level i have seen in the last 5 years. And Andy flowers batting is a LOT better than stewart.

Ave(tests) Ave(ODI)
A. Flower 53 35
A. Stewart 39 30

I wonder who is the better batsman now

How can you say Stewart is the worst? Oh, and Stewart's average is 40 mate...have a look: Alec Stewart Profile

Flower is indeed superb but Stewart was the top runscorer in the 90s in Tests, out of all the players from every country! Now I don't call that crap...

This topic is biased toward the batting aspect of a keeper-batsman. Remember, the main purpose of Test selection should be for your keeping skills and that's what makes a good keeper-batsman.

It's not surprising it's biased that way...since the name of the topic is: Worlds Best Keeper/Batsmen

I guess it comes down to how highly you rate the importance of keeping and batting in a wicketkeeper/batsman. To me, that term weighs them pretty much equally and as such, Gilchrist being ranked highly at both makes him the #1 about Flower and Boucher. Guys like Sangakkara and Stewart are let down here due to less impressive keeping, whilst Hart, Jacobs, Taibu, Mashud, Latif, Akmal, Patel, Ratra etc. can't bat as well.

However, IMO a keeper (especially in Tests) should be picked on how well he keeps wicket, with batting as a bonus, so in a Worlds Best Keeper poll I wouldn't pick Gilly or Flower. But this is Batsman/Keeper so it's gotta be Gilchrist.

Yeah Robbie Hart is a very good keeper but he's never going to set the world on fire with his batting, he'll ground out a gritty 50 for you but not a dazzling century like a Gilchrist or Flower would.

Brendon McCullum is also a very good keeper, however there are expectations on his batting aswell so time will tell how he develops as an all-round keeper.

Don't you think that maybe on the world stage at the moment, selectors think in terms of whether a guy can bat well more than wicketkeep well. I know a few people on this forum think that having a specialist wk is a key aspect of a team but I don't think that selectors do anymore because having a batsman/wicketkeeper rather than a wicketkeeper/batsman allows them to have 6 batsman (including wk) and then 4 bowlers and an allrounder. Otherwise why has Rob Turner not been a fixture in the England side(there's probably better examples but i can't think of any...mental block on Friday night:) )?The poll does say "Worlds Best Keeper/Batsmen" but i think thats what its all about nowadays

Jack Russell would have been a better example.

Note to all the Read detractors: 180 opening for England Academy vs NSW XI, when he got out the score was 254-4.
