disagree

Robin Smith never opened, not in this period at least

Allan Lamb was the true champ against West Indies. The no of 100s he scored against them bears testimony
Lamb must have been good against WI, but Malik was better. Average difference of 12 cannot be discounted that easily. Infact Malik in his early career was one of the best players against genuine pace and bounce.

the average difference can't be brought up while comparing 22 tests with 7 or whatever

I was alive in that era. Lamb scored 6 centuries against the fiercest West Indies pacers and had their utmost respect. Malik scored 1 and no one remembers it except statsguru

Exactly. Statsguru is not biased. "Everyone" are. And when Malik made that century he made it against Marshall, Walsh, Bishop and Ambrose. Pakistan won it too. Infact all hi innings 0f note were made against a four prong attack which were equally if not more fearsome than what Lamb faced.

That is one century by Malik versus six by Lamb
