Women's football stuff that doesn't deserve its own thread

Outstanding performance by Arsenal yesterday. Barcelona will be another level altogether in the final, but walloping Lyon on their own patch is one for the ages.

I was very surprised when I spotted that score, especially after losing the first leg. But how they get anything out of Barcelona is beyond me, just a completely different level.

Meanwhile, Portsmouth Ladies survived their first season in the Women's Championship having been cannon fodder early on, and looks like they'll be playing Palace next season.

Yeah, Palace were never quite good enough for the WSL, which I think is generally the way of it for promoted teams. They've mostly acquitted themselves pretty well against stronger opponents, although the 7-1 defeat at home to West Ham must have been embarrassing to behold. Now that my daughter's season has finished, we'll probably go and see their final home match next Sunday, especially as Gander Green Lane is only a couple of miles from where we live. The only other game we were able to attend was when Man City visited Selhurst Park and won 3-0 without breaking into a sweat.

I watched this last night, and it's simply wonderful.

To the uninitiated (like me beforehand) it's about what was really the first ever women's football world cup, which took place in Mexico in 1971. But it's not officially recognised as that due to the attitude of FIFA towards something that they didn't approve of at the time. The footage, only recently recovered, is glorious. The interviews with the players (from Mexico, England, Italy, France and Denmark) are fascinating and heart-breaking. And the attitudes of football associations (all male, naturally) are shocking. Oh, and the Italy vs Mexico brawl is spectacular. 100% recommended.

The Guardian review does it far more justice than I just did.

I think one of my daughter's ex team-mates has been playing for Portsmouth this season. Does the name Lily Dent ring a bell?

I don't follow it that closely, but I see she played games up until Feb but seems to have gone missing since. I'm guessing she was injured seeing as they didn't fill out the subs bench for a couple of games.

Jokes aside, a pretty remarkable run by Arsenal to win it. They had to get through two stages of qualifying. In the group stage they lost 5-2 to Bayern in the opener then won five on the trot and lost both opening legs to Real and Lyon in the knock-out round, turning the semi against the latter around by winning 4-1 in France. (They even had to come from behind in the final qualifying round after losing the first leg).

Barcelona were two times defending champions and, after losing 2-0 to Manchester City in their group stage opener, scored 44 goals to 5 conceded in nine consecutive wins in the competition (including dispatching English champs Chelsea 8-2 in the semi).

So, never in any doubt, is basically what you're saying?

If there's any justice that should be the BBC's Sports Personality team of the year sorted, but it'll likely be the Lions by virtue of a slightly spawny 2-1 test series win down under.

Depends how confident they'll be giving it to Bazball England given they'll only be 2 up in the Ashes at the point of the ceremony, having previously dispatched India 5-0 at home.

England start their Euros defence tonight v France. A goal ruled out for England after VAR check showed the English player's little toe was offside. They've seriously got to change it to the daylight rule

And that was the last we've seen of England as a coherent force, France miles superior ever since the disallowed goal. Not for the first name, big names like Mead, Bronze, Stanway and Walsh have been poor or invisible. James and Russo have been the only ones looking the part

After the French hiccough, England dispatched the Dutch 4-0 and are cruising against the hapless Welsh 3-0 after 30 mins. Watching it and you realise there is still daylights between the different tiers of international women's football, far more so than the men's.

Could easily have been 6 or 7 by h/t.

As things stand they’d get Germany in the QF’s, but that would put them in the Spanish half of the draw. Would prefer a French equaliser versus the Dutch.
