Who would you pick? Three players to start a team

The Wheel is Forever
Let's say you were the coach of a new up and coming Test nation (Bangladesh for example), and you had a choice of picking and importing three current players from the beginning of their careers to start your team, and then building around them. Who would you pick?

Rules:

You get the players for their entire careers (Tendulkar 1989-, Dravid 1996-), etc. You can only pick three players, and all must be current players (i.e no Bradman, Ambrose, etc). You know in advance how they will turn out.

Please list three players, and list WHY you want to pick them.

1) Glenn McGrath: Bowlers win matches, and no one bowls out the top order quite like him. An obvious first choice.

2) Muttiah Muralitharan: Bowlers win matches, and no one dominates a game quite like him.

3) Shane Warne: Bowlers win matches, and he has high cricketing acumen. He can dominate as well and bowl long spells, and he'd also be my captain. Plus, to keep him happy, I'd supply him with a never ending stream of women. And all the cell phones he wants.

Plus, Warne + Murali bowling in tandem against England means England would implode within 20 overs.

I would say that a bowling attack of McGrath, Warne and Murali would pretty much make it the equal and probably better of any in the world, regardless of who the fourth (and perhaps fifth) bowlers are. We obviously wouldn't be world beaters without a batting lineup, but I bet we'd be in contention in a lot of games and even win our fair share.

And you'd need the two spinners, cause our batting means they'll be defending low scores a lot.

In the end, quality bowling > quality batting, as India keeps demonstrating throughout its history.

Others who were in contention:

Tendulkar: AAARGH. I cannot believe I am leaving him out. He is my all time favorite player. Sachin, please forgive me! But the fact is, that he is a batsman, and bowlers are just more important. Otherwise he'd be in there.

Flintoff: Fantastic, but he was ordinary for a large part of his career before becoming brilliant.

a must on anyones list must be warnie and then flintoff for his sheer guts and botham like attitude and finally s pollock, a model proffessional who never gives less than 100 %

1) Glenn McGrath

As you have outlined the bowling attack is the key to winning matches. I don't think anyone would disagree that McGrath is the standout quick of this generation and he is a no brainer selection to take the new ball.

2) Muttiah Muralitharan

The second selection comes down to the two great spinners, Muralitharan or Warne. Not only are they both great strike bowlers but they shoulder the workload of their respective attacks and bowl from one end, unchanged, for long periods of time which becomes even more vital in a new side lacking depth to their bowling attack.

3) Kumar Sangakkara

I do think however you would want at least one batsman to build the side around. While Sangakkara and Gilchrist may be a step below the elite of Tendulkar, Lara and Ponting when it comes to judging batting in isolation, when you have a raging spinner of the ball in Muralitharan or Warne you are going to need a quality keeper. A sharp stumping opportunity or a tough caught behind chance missed will bridge the batting gap and then some.

Now the hard part comes when you have to choose between Gilchrist/Warne and Sangakkara/Murali to fill the two spots. I have sided with the Sri Lankan duo purely because Sangakkara is a top order batsman and already plays a big role in holding his nations batting together while Gilchrist is the cherry on top, if you like, of the Australian batting order and often comes in to face a demoralized opposition attack.

Freddy and KP for the skills and the role-model status, who better to make kids intrested in cricket than these two?

And murali to win matches.

Mahindinho

State Vice-Captain
Faaip, I was about to say something very similar!

Lara's an immense batsman and would be inspirational to the kids. I agree that you need a good quick and a great spinner...fortunately, we have a couple of both still playing!

McGrath, Lara and Warne.

Much as it pains me to say it, I'd leave Murali out in favour of Warne - I think Warne would make the better captain as he's got a superb cricketing brain.

If not those three, then Pollock, Lara and Murali. With Pollock instead of McGrath, you get a bit of batting and some captaincy...which means I get to put Murali in there :)

You'd suffer through all those years of Freddie mediocrity for two years of brilliance (so far) when you can have a McGrath taking wickets all that time?

SS, McGrath isn't really that obvious, sure he's a great bowler. But Murali would be the most obvious tbh, he take more wickets.

1) Muttiah Muralidharan
2) SRT
3) Shane Warne

I did read your original post, it was just the way how you made it sound as though it is as obvious as 1+1=2.

Steve Waugh, Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath.

Was very tempted to pick Fleming for his captaincy but I figured Warne could do a decent enough job.

Shaun Pollock, Sachin Tendaulkar, Shane Warne

Two great bowlers, who are both handy or more than handy with the bat (probably necessary given the other losers on the team) and Tendaulkar to get them a score to bowl at.

1.Inzamam-ul-Haq (The greatest of all batsman and the great match winner player)

2.Mohammed Asif (The great bowler still learning and if he continues bowling like this he will be a better bowler than Wasim Akram and Mcgrath)

3.K.Sangakkara/A.Gilchrist (Both are the best wicket keepers)

Jono

Virat Kohli (c)
^ Yeah that'd be mine too.

If you're going to only have 3 options, bowlers are key, but batting isn't totally useless and by having champion bowlers who are more than useful with the bat (particularly in Pollock's case), they'd be my choice.

Not completely sure you read the first post. And Jono... ticking the quote box saves embarrassment like that.

Rahul Dravid - you need someone to hold the batting together

Shane Warne - the geratest spinner of all time, can bowl alot of overs too and bats well occasionally

Adam Gilchrist - Can turn a game inside a session with the bat, very solid keeper.

McGrath
Gilchrist
Ponting.
McGrath for the reasons stated already, and he performs everywhere.
Gilchrist because he does 2 jobs for you and has done them both exceptionally, everywhere.
Ponting because, although he's not as naturally as gifted as perhaps a Lara or Tendulkar, he's been extremely consistent, India excepted.

Leaves only one great bowler and not a spinner, but something to build on.
