Subsz, in my youth I followed a number of sports quite closely, from about 1974 (Ali vs. Foreman) to about 1998 (Jordan's second three-peat) but have followed sport only casually since, even NZ sport. @capt_Luffy knows far more about NZ cricket than I do! I have always been drawn mainly to the greats (Ali, Nicklaus, Hadlee, McEnroe, Jordan, etc.) while the lesser lights have gone by the wayside in my mind. I'm not saying that they're not important, they're absolutely crucial but they don't grab me.

@peterhrt has written a deep and subtle post about Mount Rushmore here (what a true gem Peter is, honestly, we are so lucky to have him) but I'm a simple man and Mount Rushmore is for me, just about greatness, nothing more. So I would have, for NZ cricket, Hadlee, Crowe, Williamson and ... somebody else. For the fourth spot, I would have to think about it a bit more! It might not be either of Fleming or McCullum. Fleming was an excellent batsman and a great captain but I would probably go with McCullum because he had the X-factor, he was a very attacking batsman (with a SR of 64.60 cf. 45.82 for Fleming and 70.19* for Viv), there's his iconic 302, as well as his being more closely aligned to the Kane era (who succeeded him) which led to our nearly winning the 2019 Cricket World Cup final and actually winning the 2021 ICC World Test Championship final. So I would go with McCullum but I am happy to be corrected by those with more knowledge who have thought more deeply about it!

As an aside, I quite like what Nicklaus said about golf's Mount Rushmore here and also what one of the commenters said in response:

The first person who should be put on NZ cricket's Mount Rushmore is, of course, Sir Richard Hadlee because he is easily our greatest cricketer. The second person should be Hadlee's father, Walter, who was a capable cricketer in his own right as well as being a very influential administrator, not to mention that he crucially supplied the biological material required for Hadlee to come into existence. The third person should be none other than Dennis Lillee who was a huge early inspiration for Hadlee. Some will claim that Lillee is not eligible because he's Australian but as far as I'm concerned, that is neither here nor there given the nature of today's society in encouraging diversity and inclusion. The fourth "person" is not a person at all but rather, an institution: Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club because they were instrumental in Hadlee's development as a cricketer.

Walter = birth (George Washington)

Lillee = growth (Thomas Jefferson)

Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club = development (Theodore Roosevelt)

Hadlee = preservation (Abraham Lincoln)

I know the analogy (with Hadlee being NZ cricket) is not perfect but it's the best I could come up with!

I swear this rushmore thread’s been done like 10x
Is that a Mount Rushmore of Mount Rushmore threads?

Intrigued so many of the WI quartets are batters only (first page at least, cba to read beyond it)
