Where to for NZ cricket in the next few years?

State Vice-Captain
i think sinclair will make the test squad, i dont think he squanded any chance prior to him being drpped he averaged 40, which included three 50's on the trot against rsa one off match, bang. and aust. his next 3 inns, netted hm 4 runs. he got selected to play test series against sri lanka in wc year nice one bracewell and only played 2 games, in very trying conditions. it'll be poor form to not give sinclair the benefit of doubt due to the wc year.

I'm far from convinced of Cumming, but I'm yet to see a better option, really. He deserves a shot IMO.
When Vincent went down in the WC I wanted Cumming to go because I feel he's improved since his first last real go. He played reasonably well against SL. His age concerns me though, he won't be around much longer. What happened to Horne and Spearman? They just disappeared...

Horne's retired, Spearman moved to England and is playing for Gloucestershire. I do rate Cumming as a Test opening prospect, but I don't think much of his ability in one-day cricket. His State Shield stats aren't the best.

Both were fairly rubbish, for a start. Spearman plays in England and he scored a few runs yesterday IIRC.

Age shouldn't be a major consideration for test cricket IMO, given the most important test match is always the one you're currently playing. It's different in one day cricket where building to the World Cup is always the focus, but if Cumming is the best option, which IMO he is at this stage, he should be selected regardless of age. How has failed to impress, Vincent is not an opener, James Marshall is not test standard and the only thing I know about Peter Ingram is the fact that he's a member of a rugby league forum I used to visit.

Haha he's into his choppers too. So easy to distract him in class....

Yeah but I'd rather develop someone young who is mentally and physically ready than use a kind of stop gap to postpone the problem. Sadly How is'nt ready so in my (slightly biased) opinion it's time to use Pinga. (Ingram)

Well, Cumming is only three years older than Ingram anyway...
4 I think. Maybe give both a go and who does best gets the spot? Or just pick both? As I said though, I am probably being quite biased:laugh: Though in saying that I want Cumming to be a big sucess. I liked the way he handled batting on a greentop in the List A final. OK he only got 11, but he was patient and remained calm on a nasty surface. Something his teammates could not do. He got my respect then. Random way I know.

I don't agree with all the praise Styris is getting. Sure he did well in the WC, but it really is a golden patch of form for him. We all know he does well in the caribean, but what about other areas? In the SA test series recently he scored one 50 in 3 tests...
Styris is a very good ODI player and a very ordinary test match player. He deserves his place in the test side, but one can hardly see him being a world class player at any point in time.

I think it was you that said that we could use Styris for slow pitches only And someone else for the rest. I think that is quite a good idea.

Nah he's my teacher. When is our next series incidentally?
What subject does Ingram teach?

I think we are chappell-haddlee'ing just after the twenty20 wc. After that, I think theres a home series with bangladesh, then away at SA, and then home against england. (all tests and one dayers, the order could be different.)

http://www.cricinfo.com/db/FORTHCOMING/FORTHCOMING_TOURS_NZ.html for the upcoming series
http://content-nz.cricinfo.com/bangladesh/content/story/293155.html for the supposed bangladesh series

About cummings' 11 in the state ODI final; He was pretty good apart from when he missed a straight one from chris martin.

So in my opinion: NZ top order for bangladesh and/or england home series:
Papps
Cumming
Fleming
Fulton
Styris
Oram etc

And when away in South Africa:
Papps
Cumming/ Vincent
Fleming
Fulton
Styris / Vincent
(note: vincent must be playing in either of the above roles. And he MUST go to aus in the chappel hadlee. He has a fantastic record in Aus.)

R.E. (I go to a catholic school)

Agreed about Vincent in Australia, he could well win games for us there.

We could try some newbies against Bangladesh, but keep the core players as we don't need any upset victories from Bangladesh.

20/20 team

McCullum
Vincent
Taylor
Fulton
Styris
Houpapa
Oram
Vettori
Mills
Bond
Patel

My SA tour team:

Papps
Cumming
Fleming
Vincent
Fulton
Oram
McCullum
Franklin
Patel (Vettori is a bit off form ATM)
Bond
Martin (good against SA)

We could swap Patel for an extra seamer or batsman though.

Bangladesh series;

Papps
Cumming (How if Cumming fails in SA)
Sinclair (Dserves another go, and is a bit of a Bangladesh basher)
Vincent (Styris if he doesn't perform in SA)
Fulton
Oram
McCullum
Franklin
Patel
Bond
J McMillan

For the England series the best players over the season get the spots.

Im pretty sure the bangladesh series is before the south african tour.

As for Vettoris exclusion in the two series  what!? I was under the assumption vettori is a given when trying to play the best side. IMO if patel's good enough to be one of the four bowlers, good on him, but at the expense of Vettori? No way. Vettori is considered the next captain of NZ, how can he captain a team he's not playing in!?

If Vettori is not a better bowler than Patel (which he is), He offers alot of solidity to the lower order if thats what it comes down to.

ATM Patel is bowling better than Vettori though now that I look at it, he should be used more than I have used him.

IMO our best bowlers are (tests);

Bond (surprise, surprise)
Vettori
Franklin
Patel
Oram
Mills
Martin
Gllespie
Mason

That order could change easily though, it's very even

ODI's:

Bond
Mills
Vettori
Patel
Oram
Franklin
Gillespie
Mason
Martin
