Where to for NZ cricket in the next few years?

Haha, no.
OK so it was a bit extremely optimistic. 35-40 then.

Oh and Matt52, I personally don't think middle order players should open. It never works and I don't want to waste good players like Fulton and Nicol. Fulton shouldn't find it too hard keeping number 3, not much competition compared to numbers 4 and 5. Nicol I would back to gain a middle order spot.

If he averages over 35 I'd be happy.

Oh, have you heard of Justin Langer and Virender Sehwag?

I know what you mean ,, its not the perfect answer,, but I dont think there are any real other cotenders unless Papps becomes some sort of revelation on this tour...

But Personally, Ive seen Nicol play plenty of times and I think he is good but not good enough to be in the middle order... He pretty slow at scoring, is really patient and good on the back foot compared to other NZ front foot plodders..

He seems to prefer to leave the ball rather than hit it, pretty boring to watch but it seems to me like he has the sort of attitude of an opener but plays in the middle order. Kinda like if Mark Richardson batted at no5 for the NZ team..a bit strange.

I think he will be wasted playing domestic stuff the rest of his life unless he has a go or someone advises him to try opening. Lets face it, If you can breathe and walk 80m to the middle of a cricket ground then you can be an NZ opener..

It is a bit difficult to average more than 40 though as not many kiwis have done it. If he gains consistency then he will average 45 easily.

From what I've heard and read about Southee and Bennet I can't wait to see them play for NZ
Oram'll be interesting to watch. Or ridiculous shortage of test cricket over the last 18 months has meant its difficult to see how anyone is developing. If Oram's improvement in the one day game translates to better performances for the test team, than an average above 40 is possible. But at the moment it looks like his bowling could still be just as valuable given how awful the rest of the unit is performing.

Hmmm...Bennett's been pretty rubbish for Canterbury for the last few seasons. Admittedly he's only young, but we haven't really seen anything from him yet to suggest he'll make a great international player besides a couple of decent performances for New Zealand A against useless invitation sides. Southee's performances have been more encouraging, but it's too early to really know for certain either way.

As for Taylor, I think you're overselling Ryder's superiority in the longer form of the game. In the last couple of season's Ryders only averaged 3 more than Taylor (45 compared to 42). As Taylor's gotten older his performances in FC cricket have only gotten better, while the opposite seems to be true for Ryder. I definately would be stunned if Taylor wasn't a permanent fixture in the side five years from now. I can't say the same for Fatty Ryder.

I predict NZ can be world champions within 5 years, hear is how to do it.....

Join the Commonwealth of Australia. (It is still in our constitution, so you can be counted as an original state.) Vettori would fit nicely into our side, and we might even give Fleming a run instead of M Clarke, and Bond if he ever stays on the park but the rest can play Pura cup. You get a side that can win the Rugby cup occasionally as an extra!

Yes they succeeded. Countless others though have failed miserably.

In answer to Matt52, yes it could be worth a try. But he would definitely, definitely need to open in FC first.

And malleboy, dream on. Not going to happen. We're far too proud to become Aussies.

Thought I'd drag up this thread (if you don't like me doing it for the 100th time then don't read it:p ) just to ask: Are you surprised at the players we've seen picked or succeed lately? I'm surprised at the success of How and Ryder.

EDIT: And I disown all endorsements of O'Brien and Diamanti I made in this thread:p

Genuinely surprised at Taylor's Test series against England and Ryder's ODI exploits too. Both did very well in the format they haven't been that successful at in the past, domestically atleast.
