Posting Hayden comparison threads is a sign that CW is finally healing from the trauma of the Richard era.

It’s a better comparison than Hayden vs Atherton, but I’d say Sehwag was a little better.

Sehwag is the best player of spin I have seen in my lifetime. But he wasn’t all that great against pace bowling.

Hayden was an excellent player of spin in his own right. And he wasn’t that weak against pace in the manner Sehwag was although he was just average.

Overall Hayden for me by a hair’s width..

wasn't Sehwag perfectly good against pace until it moved off the straight at which point he was pretty inept? sure he went fine in Australia but terribly in England for example.

He was fine against pure pace but less than mediocre against fraction of lateral movement. Averages in 20s in Sa, England and NZ for example.

Hayden too averaged in 30s in Eng and SA and 28 in NZ. I can’t believe both of them where so poor against lateral movement!

Sehwag’s SR in tests is higher than Hayden’s in ODIs - and Hayden was considered an aggressive player. I still don’t think people realise just how fast scoring Sehwag the test player actually was. He was Pant on steroids, but consistently so (whereas Pant is an absolute firecracker but does have stodgy innings/starts - in a good way though).

Honestly though it’s really really hard to split them. I go with Sehwag because on a road he will absolutely obliterate you and take the game away in a single session.

Two quintessential 2000s openers. Would give the edge slightly to Sehwag but like Sm00teh said, would have been a barrel of fun watching them open the batting together.

Both were really good in favourable conditions and pretty mediocre in unfavourable conditions. Sehwag would absolutely obliterate you on a flat deck with no lateral movement, but Hayden was perhaps a little less inept against swing (although still not great). It's Sehwag for me.
