*Unofficial* New Zealand Black Caps Thread

Yes, I knew he prefers a speedy indoor carpet and a 140+ ball hitting his bat, but being outscored by Joe Carter in Indian conditions wasn't something I foresaw. Work from home and raise your little superstar in the Bay of Plenty and well away from Wellington's indoor carpet, if you truly wish to try and create the new Kane Williamson, I suppose.

As I noted in the NZA thread, Ravindra saw it as just "understandable" that Stead and Larsen would make his first big international assignments the versatile duties of an all-rounder (like a mid-ranking Vaishya). In NZ ways of thinking this was "easing a youngster into the Test fray", which Rachin hasn't misunderstood at all, but in Indian terms I'm not sure you really tell a young Brahmin or Kshatriya child to go and "get your toe in the door" in what is typically mid-ranking Vaishya or low-ranking Dalit duties.

He ideally wants Will Young's spot in the Test team and Guptill's spot in the ODI team. He will bowl and likes to bowl, but that facet might tend to not go so well if it's become thankless mule work for a team getting smashed by its betters. That's just my read on it.

He's a young allrounder, and they usually (not always) take more time than specialists. Imran, Hadlee, Cairns, Flintoff are examples who spring to mind.

Not only is he an allrounder, he's an opening batsman and fingerspinner in New Zealand.

His domestic results are exceptional considering.

He'll probably be 25 by the time he's truly ready to be the player we want.

Let the kid bat in his natural position in NZ conditions consistently and he'll turn up. Personally I'd be looking at him for those February/March tests next year. Ravindra, Latham, Williamson, Conway, Young, Mitchell, Blundell would be my top 7.

This is a very strange if not casteist statement to make

Oh just last week I was reading on Twitter two Indians watching NZA and one was downplaying the scores made against their attack, writing them off as really nothing more than "farmers".

Trust me, at no point would you ever see 'farmer' used as a synonym for 'second-rate cricketer' if it were two New Zealanders talking about cricket.

Even when I used to do it, I'd flatter them with the term 'agribusinessman'.

Just makes me want to think of some famous farmer bowlers, NZs Colin Meads of the cricket field. But, I can't think of any actually.

Just some foreign ones. Eddie Brandes and Peter Taylor and Boyd Rankin.

Ewen Chatfield's nicknames were the Naenae Express and the 'Mer (short for farmer even though he was from Wellington).

A week out from a home T20I for the Black Caps .... but front page of NZC website has nothing about the games, instead info about how to buy a replica T20 World Cup shirt, several posts about White Ferns recent games, an Instgram video which appears to promote a coffee provider, about Guptill's birthday, about NZ A squad returning from India ....
