What was the last time NZ had a genuine top 6 batter that was a useful 2nd spinner? Pollard in late 60s / early 70s? Williamson pre-elbow problems? Santner might have been an option if he had more time to work on his FC batting.
Dipak Patel. In his first iteration. Just a shame about the batting. Before his re-birth as a spinner.

Edit. Although in saying this. IIRC Dipak had a test bowling average of about 210 by the end of his run as a specialist batsman. Remember that in a few cricket almanack stats sections before his recall.

Stead saying Williamson is likely to be out for at least two months, and probably won't be undergoing surgery.

Dipak's actually got up to 349.00

Before he came in as the designated spinner and number 7 (replacing Bradburn , mid-series v Sri Lanka, after he got mauled by Aravinda)

Which also means Patel's record as a specialist spinner is quite respectable by NZ standards:

I was just thinking it's been a while since we've had one of those Astle/McMillan part-timers bowling as "partnership breakers".
Not many even in FC. Only Georgeson at the moment?

I think bats, pitches, and boundaries 10m shorter have made them redundant.
Maybe less net bowling by batsman happens so get less practice?

Cross-over with the discussion about players who would suck now thread.

Would be cool if Ravindra and Mitchell both ended up justifying their spots on batting alone, so the best four bowlers could be picked condition-dependant without worrying too much about not having a spinner at all or not having a fourth seamer.

I really don't think Mitchell's seam is worth much.

Long Wagner spells >>> any 4th seamer other than CdG

Ravindra has a point of difference though.

Yeah but it would mean that if you wanted to pick Ajaz but were worried about not having a forth seamer with the new ball on the first morning, you'd have something for that.

And it'd also mean that if you wanted to pick four quicks but were worried about not having any real variety, you'd have something for that with Rachin.

I feel like Corey Anderson was really good at this, had a golden arm. But I guess he was selected as an all-rounder rather than batsman who could do the bonus of bowling handy spells ala Astle/McMillan.

Not a black ferns story but wow,

Yes good on Amelia for speaking out about this. Similar issues dogged Sarah Taylor's career and possibly prevented her becoming England's greatest womens player, glad there is support for Kerr and she feels in a better place.

Good listen... great kid. Hope he has a great future, I'm pretty sure he will.

You almost feel like listening to a bloke that's had like a decade or two of international experience. I guess him best mates with Devon and Blundell does help. Both 30 year olds and Rachin hanging around with 30 year olds obvisouly brings that maturity and keeps the older boys kind of young too. Works both ways. I hear Ross is Rachin's good mate in the team in the Black Caps. Having someone like Ross can have very good influence absolutely no doubt. To be fair we don't have another 22 year old in the test side. Having mentors like Devon, Ross, Blundell is a god send for a young kid. Kane and Latham are the quiet types. They would be helping anyone coming in too but obviously they are a bit quiet.

Imagine someone like him making his debut in the 2000s... he would have been screwed.

Some highlights for those of us who are unable to hear the full podcast?
His call up to black caps, a phone call from head coach that he couldn't attend to as he was about to step into a flight. The appreciation of Devon Conway and how good a human being he is which we all know. Not following media mindfully and sticking to training hard and doing his best for the team. His near missing out on a year full of cricket due to a shoulder injury early this year and coming back from it. His idols in the current team, watching those guys play taking day off at school and now playing in the same team. Not complaining about Bangladesh decks but terming it foreign but giving great opportunities to learn. Giving lots of credit to guys like Jazzy, Blundell, Nicholls, Latham, coaches etc... for making it a very useful tour and helping out learning how to go about. Not going overboard about getting Kohli, nice to get but every wicket at international cricket is worth its value. About his India trips with his dad and other players each year giving him a bit of familiarity to Indian conditions. Lots of compliments to Ashwin, Jadeja and other Indian players, crowd, Eden Garden and how much they appreciate cricket and how knowledgeable the general public are in India.

The best take away is how he did not blame the conditions in Bangladesh which was worthy of complaining but he said he embraced it and learnt from it. Shows we have a good culture going.
