Disappointing. And I would hope by early Feb the NZ quarantine requirements will have eased, though I guess you can't bank on it. Only one week rather than two, right? NZC probably doesn't want to pay for that, moreso than the players being unwilling /rampantspeculation.

Looking ahead.

With a settled test top7 batting order. The structure of the domestic season is reasonably minor. NZ have been lucky to be in this situation for the last 5 or so years. (Maybe Raval could have increased his average by a run or 2 with better prep but for most of the team, especially if they are cross format players, then it is minor.)

However. This is about to change. Watling retired. Williamson likely to miss lots of cricket. Taylor on the way out. Nicholls using up his 29 lives.

How NZC structure the season is about to be as important again as it was when McIntosh prepared for Boxing day tests with a month of one-day-per-week of second division club cricket for Parnell.

It shouldn't matter for Bangladesh in January, and I wouldn't expect them to disrupt the domestic T20 over holiday period for this. I'm not complaining about this part.

But, South Africa.

Saffas are a team well set up to beat NZ and have the best record against us of all nations. But, SAF are on a down cycle and this is as good a chance as any. They are here for 2 tests on 17 Feb and 25 Feb.

Blackcaps will be playing white ball series in Australia the week before this. No complaints. This is the money earner. Our best cross-format players are adept at switching.

But what about the fringe and test specialists? They will be playing Ford Trophy.

Why oh why, is the ****ing Ford Trophy always such a ****ing sacred cow for the schedulers at NZC? It is free entry with only the final televised.

The non-earning competitions; Plunket Shield and Ford Trophy should be broken up over the season and dovetailed in to give the Blackcaps the best preparation for their next fortnight of cricket.

How ****ing hard is this for them to get their pea-brained heads around?

The Blackcaps is the conduit which earns the money. The next 2 year cycle is the last big one for this generation. Why are they not doing everything to make sure we get back to the final we have actually won?

God I hate scheduling of just two tests against SA at home. Should be a gripping and very competitive series against a team that is currently at a lower ebb but still has some great players and that we always struggle to beat.... but it's two tests. Barely satisfying. Especially if one gets hit by weather.

Are NZC done with scheduling three test series at home? As I recall the last one was against South Africa in 2017, then before that vs West Indies and England in 2013. Not a coincidence that there have been quite a few 5-match T20 series from recent memory.

Don't know, though there's almost always next-T20-WC or next-ODI-WC to prepare for so that justifies lots of that format.

I understand of course there are commercial realities and all that, so I'm not asking for too much, but the lesser tourist* getting a two test series and the better one getting three is a good balance. Three test series vs SA would be mouth-watering.

* sorry Bangladesh. Though NZ has also been a lesser tourist plenty of times and not deserved more than two tests.

Would love to see Allen slotted into one day cricket ASAP. The next one day world cup is in India and I don't think Guppy will be there by then. I don't expect Nicholls to also keep opening the batting till then either. Young and Rachin should be playing few one dayers as well this season if we are starting to think of building for one day world cup. I think the cycle for trying players for one day world cup should start now. I don't think the senior players will mind missing few one dayers particularly if the quarantine is still in place.

Ben Sears should be selected consistently for one dayers. Soon enough we will be in a situation we will have reasonable batting but bowling won't be the same in white ball cricket.

Time to put in a pool of 20 players and rotate them around. Cole, Rippon and even Michael Bracewell should be in the mix in my opinion as spin bowling all rounders.

Wouldn't like to see any change to the t20 squad. We are fairly adequate. Maybe Cleaver for Seifert but that's about it.

BTW when is the IPL starting? Will that put some spanner to the works this season?

Have we basically scheduled 3 full years of relentless T20s and no ODIs because of the rescheduled 2020/2021 WC and then the 2022 WC? So we are just going to prepare for the ODI World Cup by maybe playing a few ODIs in the last 12 months? Ugh.

IPL 2022 schedule - 27 March 2022 and 21 May 2022

If the bubble is still in place likely our players will leave by the 21st March right after the last game vs Australia. I think NZC will let them go happily.

We'll be left with one t20 and 3 ODIs vs Netherlands right after.

Bring back an FC match with accompanying OD match. Hold the Super Smash in Jan/Feb after Xmas or in Nov/Dec before Xmas. idk.

I'd love a 4 day trial match before SA arrive.

Imagine:

Conway
Cooper
Williamson
Seifert??
Nicholls
Ravindra
Blundell
Jamieson
Duffy
Henry
Wagner

Vs

Latham
Hay??
Young
Taylor
Phillips
Mitchell
Cleaver
CDG
Southee
Boult
Ajaz

Or something similar. They need some decent prep
No Santner mate? Not even for trial game? Hay no chance. Maybe Jeet Raval has a chance still.

Yeah Hay would definitely be considered too old now, even though he is talented

He's pretty much the same age as Ross Taylor ffs

Agreed 100%, although I think gup will 100% be there, don't think he should be but he will be. Does show flickering sparks of his old self every now and then....maybe this time he clicks at a WC again. Looked good in the JAM t20is in india recently. Finn Allen would be an exciting and positive move definitely.

So Kane's out of the Bangladesh series and will be touch and go for S Africa. A reprieve for Young you'd imagine.
1. Latham
2. Conway
3. Young
4. Taylor
5. Nicholls
6. Mitchell/Ravindra
7. Blundell+
8. Jamieson
9. Wagner
10. Southee
11. Boult/Patel

Patel if there's any hint of turn which is unlikely, but you never know.
