When were "selectors" actually used for the first time?

IIRR, in England it was sometime in the very late 19th-century or early 20th-century - before then, the host club issued invitations.

Until there is some thought of the "best" team being deliberately picked, I struggle to take a match terribly seriously as a Test.

When did it start in Australia?
