Selectors have taken abuse from reporters, fans and even players this the start of Test cricket (check out Blackhmam first Test 1877)

When were "selectors" actually used for the first time?
IIRR, in England it was sometime in the very late 19th-century or early 20th-century - before then, the host club issued invitations.
Until there is some thought of the "best" team being deliberately picked, I struggle to take a match terribly seriously as a Test.
