Australia is the only opponent against whom Joe Root does not have a great record. Against everyone else, he has done very well.

Yeah, fortunately he has a really small sample size against them and the rivalry between the two sides isn't at all important to his team. Passenger. rate his off spin ahead of his batting against Australia. He's just a trumped up Ian Bell.

technically you lost the 2015 Ashes entirely because of him.

Anyway, I'm going to cook some dinner. Enjoy your delusions that Joe Root is in the top 15 batsmen of all time. But turn off your webcams while you're doing it, or you'll get caught and lose your jobs.

Root I just don't see at a top 15 at all.
I'll try

Bradman

Hobbs

Sachin
Hutton
Viv
Sobers
Smith
Lara
Hammond
Gavaskar
Headley
Sutcliffe
Maybe Pollock
Chappell

I guess those are the names I can definitively put above Root, Him-Kallis-Sangakkara-Ponting can go in the same boat. I thought a bit about Pollock.

Pollock>Root. No need to think about it.

To me Ponting is definitely ahead until Root has a great series in Aus. Also Sanga, Border and Steve Waugh for me though it's closer.

It's fine, Ponting never had a great series in England or Australia either, Border and Waugh are weird discussions though.

Ponting was pretty consistently good in Ashes in England unlike Root in Aus and scored tons. Averaged 40 or thereabout in all series there. Pretty much nothing wrong with Pontings Ashes record there.

Waugh and Border I am provisionally putting ahead of Root but I expect they will be overtaken by career end.

Eh, different level of challenges, give Root those pitches and the attacks of Hoggard, Caddick or Gough and he's making hundreds too, I'm actually not sure Ponting would average more than 25 against current Australian lineup on the pitches they've produced since 2020 or so.
