Thorpe to New South Wales

brockley

International Captain
Thorpe will give us a boost in the 2nd half of the season, just when qld lose 2/3 players.
He will do some coaching, awesome,if he is a success he will be back the season after hopefully.
Interesting dave gilbert used to coach surrey and steve a rixon a blue coaches surrey, using the blue line to get a decent player is good news.
Actually trevor bayliss, graham thorpe and the 2nd xl player coach mathew mott,as well as manager dave gilbert excellent team indeed.
The reason thropes' signing was released state contracts have to go to cricket australia in the next 2 days.
BTW tassie hot on the trail of shane harwoof and nsw on the trail of beau casson.

Well Thorpe wont arrive to until January, so our youngs guys like Packman, Cowan, Creed and Krejza will get a decent run until then. Also i think our future is fine even if we buy guys like Hodge and Thorpe for short term success, as we have guys like Thornley, Haddin and Jaques who will be around for a while.

think a lot of you guys seem to be thinking Thorpe will actually be in the NSW side, the way its been reported here is he's signed for a Sidney Grade side and will be available to NSW if they have injuries.

Nah he has got a state contract and will be assistant coach at the blues, thats why it announced now contracts to be announced soon.

From the latest reports Superkingdave is right, he just coming to play grade cricket and will be allowed to play for NSW if we get injuries or our batsmen loss form. It seems that he will get a contract but that so he can play for NSW, in case of injuries. I think if an overseas player signs for a grade side, they can only play for that grade side, they can't play for the state.

"We wondered if he would be interested in being available for NSW if we needed him," said Bayliss. "This was very much a one-off. He's fully aware that if our batters are doing the job, there's no spot for him. He's happy with that. We hope he doesn't get to play for us. He's not coming over to definitely play and take some local guy's place."

If you're registered for a club side you are eligible to play for the state unless you have retired, I can't see why the rules would be different for an overseas player.

i still cant understand why New South Wales would want thorpe instead of bevan.
I don't think Bevan's commitment to coach younger players would be there to be honest. From what I understand (and this is purely hearsay) his main commitment is to himself.

Because Thorpe didn't want to become an assistant coach just so that he could get more money, without actually putting anything into the side as an assistant coach, as Bevan hoped to do at NSW and consequently did at Tasmania?

an interesting comment by Steve Waugh `` Why do we need a pom to help us ``
Yes, but that was just his initial reaction...he also said Thorpe offered a quality back-up.

Actually, heard a couple of interesting stories about Bevan in his first few months in Tassie, take them for what you will...

The Tasmanian Cricket Association (TCA) got him a nice house on the Derwent to come and live in when he moved down. After he moved in, gave someone from TCA a little call, "Sorry, it's not up to scratch, hope you've got somewhere else I can go." TCA scrambed and got him another place to live.

A few weeks into his role as "Assistant Coach", someone from the TCA asked him to go help out one of the clubs in the grade competition, just for a week. "$5 000 thanks". TCA bloke had a go at him, saying "That's part of your role, mate. Your in a coaching role, you've got to do that sort of thing".

"$5 000 thanks".

Supposedly there were plenty more incidents of the like...

I'd like to say I'm surprised but I've heard similar stories from different areas. More personality-based than financial though. This is purely speculation, but may be a reason behind his surprise early exit from the OD team.

Well under ICC rules your only meant to have two overseas players in a sqaud. For some reason if you sign for a grade/club side in Australia as overseas players you can't play for the state. Shoaib was in NSW a couple year ago playing for Mosman, but wasn't allowed to play for NSW even though we had injuries to our quicks.
