Thorpe to New South Wales

I think this is great news for NSW and for their domestic chances. After losing guys like waugh and slater a steady experienced hand from someone like Graham Thorpe is what they need. Throughout Englands relatively poor 90's and early 2000's Thorpe I think was the shining light for England with the bat.

Good luck to him

NSW goes from strength to strength for the coming season. Jacques, Thornley, Haddin and now Thorpe... pretty decent backup for their already fantastic bowling attack!

A team of champions != a champion team.

Not necessarily anyway...............

From the article it would seem he is going to be playing in grade cricket but be available to NSW if they have injury problems. He's looking to do some coaching it would seem.

Do Australian FC teams pick foreign players? What do they consider when they select someone?

True, but New South Wales certainly showed team unity as well as individual class last season after they were mostly written off having lost the Waugh's, Bevan and so on. The addition of someone like Thorpe will certianly help them further.

And they still might get Hodge. Newspapers today say that he was rather taken aback by NSW's latest offer, much more than what he expected. Makes their side look even more formidable.

I think he may have been referring to Hodge, though i don't see him in the Aussie side barring injuries.

If he is referring to Thorpe, i'm pretty certain he's going to retire from international cricket after the Ashes

On paper, the side will be strong but I think all of this buying of players to in effect also buy a Pura Cup is a portent of some rough times ahead (not necessarily this coming season). Why? Ask yourselves why NSW would contend that the players directly below the 1st side aren't good enough to run away with the cup.

It was good to see, from my perspective, that SA bit the bullet and decided to start picking players with potential who will be around for a while as opposed to a short-term fix (Andy Flower anyone?) and this from NSW smacks of winning the two cups first, the immediate future be damned. This sets a dangerous precendent in my book.

Thorpe's experience should help settle the lineup down abit, with Katich being the only other experienced player in there and he will be on international duty most of the season.

nah i don't reckon. I'd rather be winning or at least trying to win the cup rather than getting smashed most weeks like south australia. You may as well pick the best side available to you, and if that means buying.... buy... The breeding ground for this is the NSW Second XI....

Yes, but it will be better S.A. in the long run. Some of those players did start to find their feet towards the end of the season. If N.S.W. keep buying players they just might lose their good 'up & comers' to other states because they can't get a go, which provides even less options for them in the future.

players like Thornley and Cowan will still get a go, Thorpe only takes up 1 spot in the batting lineup.

It's only one player though, in an already strong team. It's not like they've stocked up on overseas players trying to build a side. SA were probably going to need superman to make them into a cup winning side in a season, NSW won it last year without Thorpe so I'd hardly say that his arrival is 'buying a Pura Cup'. His coaching will be beneficial to the guys coming up through the seconds.
