If test cricket thrives (& I think it will) - it will be mainly because cricket players - like most other people seek to strive a balance between the need to achieve comfort (money, fame, not working your butt off) and the need to have importance (as long as their peers and the cognoscenti acknowledge test cricket to be the ultimate). And the most successful people in any profession usually attain both, and certainly want to.
That's why an individual perceived as shallow like Yuvraj - who has more than his share of money and the good life in limited overs cricket - is willing to risk making a fool of himself and show up in whites.
IPL actually simplifies this balancing act, by taking care of the former set of needs in a six week period. The "casualty' is likely to be less important ODI tournaments and, frankly, tests against weaker sides. Why should SRT bother to show up vs BD in a test match - other than for match practice - if his achievements against them are going to be always discounted?
